World Panic! by raarlac

[raw]
made by raarlac for LD23 (COMPO)
A bullet hell game. Requires Flash Player!
Use the mouse to move the Earth. You don't have any weapons and the Moon is useless just like in real life!
And the "world" is tiny, cmon... just 40x40 pixels.

I was planning to make the whole Solar Sistem but I run out of time :(

all made by me http://twitter.com/malditosponeis
Tools:
- Flixel + Flashdevelop
- Fruity Loops Studio
- Photoshop CS5

I tried and tried, but I couldn't get past Venus, having to move with the bullet pattern was fun. Also the movement was jerky as the game went on. Nice work.

The first part with random bullets made me think it was going to be easy...how wrong I was. Nice take on the "bullet hell" genre. It would have been nice to use the moon as a shield, but it's still fun without that.

I enjoyed this - I found Venus to be pretty difficult, I like the thought that went into the various bullet patterns used :)

VERY GOOD entry! The game is incredibly hard, but it's fun to try and beat it! Let me get one thing clear: this is the best entry I have seen so far, practically maxed out the ratings. Here's what frustrated me: I had no chance, spent quite a lot of time but couldn't get past the 2nd planet. The main reason isn't the difficulty itself, but setback punishment: after losing in the 3rd bullet pattern, I have to play again patterns 1 and 2, which are very easy once you figure them out, so it's really just an operational task demanded to get to the 3rd pattern again (which happens often considering the game difficulty). I'd go for a difficulty / punishment balance like that on Super Meat Boy, where the super hard levels are compensated by having death being punished with very little setback. You die and you're right in front of the challenging bit again in 5 secs.
On the bright side, for some reason I had to keep trying again and again - there is something really charming and provocative in this game. The soundtrack is awesome too and really sets the mood for what's coming. I'll definitely leave the flash window open and try it again later, when my motivation is higher! This is the best entry I've seen so far. Congratulations!

Thank you guys! Your comments are motivating me to finish the game :)
I'll add some nice features in the next updates! (and nerf Venus maybe? xD)

Love it - really like how small this is - and how you don't have any weapons - very nice.

An excellent entry! The music is soooooo good!

My only gripe is that I couldn't resize the window. With such a small window, I'd have to change my mouse sensitivity to get past venus. Still, it was gorgeous and fun!

LOVE these kind of games. And this one is now exception, very good job on all of the polish that is in here. And lovely bullets patterns too. Great! :D

Very nice. Bookmarked it so I can try to pass Venus later :)

Definitively something I would play if you make it complete!

Hard, hard, HARD! But so fun at the same time :-D. Venus was too much for me, though, but just to listen to the music again I tried and tried ;-)

I love Bullet Hell games more than most, so let me start by saying: AMAZING JOB! It was fun, it was hard, it was rewarding, and it felt good. One of the better games I've played so far! Besides the possibility of being harder to play in a browser because the mouse can go outside the canvas (play the SWF itself in fullscreen to avoid this) it is really polished and ready to go. Again, amazing!!! :D

Quite impossible to play with a trackpad, but this game should be awesome with an actual mouse. It's beautiful.

The music is great and the Earth is adorable. The bullet patterns and the fact that each Planet has its own distinct style helped make each level fun to play through.

So. Awesome.

This is a real gem! So simple, so elegant. You get to the essence of the bullet hell shooter, but without weapons. Perhaps because there are no weapons. Really loved the planet graphics. And what the hell is up with the music? It's fantastic, amazing that you made it in 48h while still having to make the whole game. It's nice, really gets you going. I really wanted to fuck Venus up, but he was a real pain in the ass. :D I saved it to play more later.

Just one suggestion, make it clear to the player that there's no weapons. I never read instructions in here or elsewhere before playing, I want to see if the game gives me all that I need to know. I felt that as a shmup looking game, there needed to be shooting, so I spent a while trying to figure it out and kept dying. Haha. So I quit the game, thinking it was broken, and saw here that it was intentional.

15 sec : "oh i get it"
1min : "meh... i don't really like the gameplay but it's nicely done"
5min: "oh c'mon! I barely touched it!"
10min: "i really hate those kind of game. Really"
20min : [rage quit]

Nice! But it seems that I'm getting old, the game is way to difficult for me. :D Venus was the end for me. Simon

This was a little bit too difficult for my tastes, but it is quite polished and fun for people who enjoy games that make them punch the keyboard. Great work.
