Joe The Alien by coolo

This is my first entry for a Ludum Dare competition! I hope you enjoy it.

"Joe The Alien" is a 2.5D platformer in cartoon style. I'm not the best graphics guy but I did my best.

The game has also a little story about Joe and his unnamed friend. Their UFO broke and the had to make an emergency landing onto the earth!

Making this game took about twenty hours. I used GLBasic because it's a wonderful language for rapid game prototyping and has a powerful 2D and 3D engine included.

For 3D modelling and texturing I use Milkshape 3D. For 2D graphics I mainly used Paint.NET but also a little bit of Adobe Photoshop (the titlescreen for example). For sound I used sfxr and for music... wait there is no music at all... I can't make music :(. For planning I used a piece of paper and a pen (what a surprise!).

Development was stright forward. There was only one badass bug which didn't want to get fixed (took around 4 hours :(...) Now I hope the game is bugfree, but I don't think so.

Wow, very good game for that short time. Seems pretty complete also. The main player character is a bit "slim" in comparison to the bugs, but the overall graphics are great!

Great one! I loved the 2.5d perspective, and although it was short, there was enough variation with the spikes, the enemy ladybugs and the spring-mushrooms to keep me playing. Good job! A platformer by-the-book, but nicely executed. Keep it up!

I played the Android version. Here are some notes about it:

The performance seems reasonably solid on my phone, so good on you for that! The graphics read reasonably well though the text is a bit small on my screen at times. That is relatively minor though.

Unfortunately I was not a fan of the control scheme. The onscreen buttons were too small and I frequently failed to press them, or I pressed and jumped simultaneously. Screen buttons in general are problematic in mobile games, paricularly action style games. Perhaps making the entire height of the screen, and the entire width out to the edge a hotspot for touches would help matters, but then you have the fact that it is awkward to keep switching thumbs to jump depending on the direction I move, which is a direct result of the button positions. That was the hardest part to get used to.

I did not yet play it on my tablet. I predict that it would be more difficult to play there because i would have to stretch my thumbs more to reach "off the buttons" to jump.
