Arcane Dungeons ( aka Evil Lord vs Angel for the salvation or perdition of a hero's soul) by Christina Antoinette Neofotistou
So ok.
This is the entry of Nathan Mitton ( zlaper@gmail.com ) and me, Christina Neofotistou.
So. This is not very fun, because it's missing the A.I. Nathan was too tired to try.
I was also too tired to finish all the graphics.
But all in all, it's quasi-polished and we're happy we did it, and it's more than a proof of concept. You can still play it with a friend, if you don't peek over his cards, but it's not very practical.
Ok, this is a game where a Demon Lord and an Angel battle it out with cards. The Demon Lord tries to kill the hero in a tower defense fashion. The Angel tries to keep him alive long enough to reach the end of the level.
The Demon Lord's traps evolve when a trap card is reinforced with a secondary (and tertiary) effect.
Evolution also comes into play in the way the angel's protections and level upgrades to the hero remain with the hero. It's the standard evolution of RPGs.
Finally, the very dungeon evolves during the course of the battle. Each time you play through the dungeon, the hero gets to experience a completely different adventure.
HOW TO PLAY.
We tried to keep it super-simple.
The Demon Lord ("Keeper" of the dungeon) plays one of the trap cards (pit, crusher, rotating blades, spike, arrow trap) into one of the evil slots (the square with the double evil snake). The card summons a trap on the dungeon tile above it. The Keeper can play as many cards as his or her Mana will allow (your mana pool is the number on the top left corner of the game, next to the blue mana gem. The mana cost is at the bottom left of each card)
Once you have at least one trap in place, you can play an Upgrade(Evolution) card on it. This adds effects like mana steal or ice damage to your trap.
You then end your turn.
The Angel plays his/her own cards, which counter the Keeper's traps or make the hero more capable, in order to survive (extra strength etc).
After the Angel ends turn, the battle phase of the game is like this:
The hero explores the dungeon one tile at a time, encountering traps or magic potions. Each time he lands on something evil, he takes damage, each time he lands on something good he is healed or given a positive effect.
After all three tiles have been played out, the keeper starts again, and so on, until either the hero reaches the end of the dungeon (counted in steps, on the top right) in which case the Angel wins. Or the hero dies and the Keeper wins.
Not implemented:
- incidental music. I wrote it, but we didn't have time to implement the changes. So enjoy the static music track, it still took me half a day to finish.
- a different take on the gameplay, in which the hero walks only one square at a time, and the players only get to play one card. We wanted to check both versions to see which is more fun, but ran out of time.
- all the different card art. Turns out it's a huge job. I'm sorry :(
- the AI, obviously
So, this is our attempt. Enjoy, do PLEASE leave feedback on the gameplay, and check back for updated versions.
LD is the best!

Cheers! And keep it up!
i want to see more games involving your art so bad
Please push it further, i'd like to play a final version!
Wasnt quite able to really figure out the gameplay - I could lay traps to damage the guy but how to heal/protect him I don't know really.
Good that this had music as well. The concept is quite innovative too.
The art works great and the gameplay does too. I just didn't understand why couldn't lay down some cards. Maybe an error message would've been handy there?
(Edit: Re-read the description and saw that those are upgrade cards and I also noticed that quite intuitively I can discard cards.)
Try working on it a bit more and you've got a great game for mobile devices. Good job!
The audio and visuals are beautiful... though I'm not too sure that needs to be said. : )
But even without the game remains awesome. Cards seem well balanced. Really nice game.
I think this could also work really well as a real board game/ccg.
Finally some extra points from the nice a fitting music :)
The ability cards could also be a little clearer. Wasn't sure what was an enchantment or not, and at first I thought the Angel's spells were hurting the Hero or enhancing the traps too. But figured it out in the end.
Overally, very good. Graphics & Audio are lovely.
