Beast Feast by UP_Kevin

[raw]
made by UP_Kevin for LD24 (JAM)
Straight outta Underground Pixel comes an arcade game, the likes of which you've never seen before! Beast Feast was made in 72 hours for Ludum Dare 24 and stars an adorable... erm... monster. In order to evolve to his final form, he must eat the meat dropped by the enemies that he blows up with his egg bombs. Reach 50 on the food counter to win, and try your hardest to get there in the lowest time possible!

Instructions: Arrow keys to move. Z to drop an egg, Z again to blow it up. Evolve by collecting food dropped by killed enemies. Don't get touched by an enemy or get too close to a bomb you set off or else you'll lose 5 food!

Addictive! The progression feels a bit slow though. Music and visuals also really nice.

Graphics were cute and I liked the monster gladiator setting but I agree with Waynetron that the progression felt a bit slow. I think an enemy with ranged attacks would be neat too, mix it up a bit and force me to be more proactive about killing it.

Nice game play, maybe the meat should go away when you put down a new egg.

Addicting gameplay, great music and a solid artstyle. Great work overall!
The only thing that was a bit annoying was the movement. I can see why you smoothed it, but it feels annoying in this arcade style game. Completed the game and loved it all the way.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I did the programming for Beast Feast and had a lot of fun with it. We had a good team for art, sound, and design.

Love the sprites; the player monster has a lot of personality and I enjoyed the additional forms. I liked this game best around 30 meat, where there were a few different attack patterns to avoid and I could collect meat quickly. I think ranged attacks, faster spawning, and more aggressive enemies would go a long way towards improving this game's hook. It feels very coherent, and the feedback from dropping and blowing up eggs is fun by itself. I just want to make more decisions with those eggs.

Nice variety of monsters. Nice pixel style and controls. Wish you evolved new abilities instead of just look. Or am I missing something?

The flow of the game feels really good, especially with the music :) Graphics are cute too!

No, you're not missing anything. You only change form through evolutions, no new abilities are gained. We would have liked to add more features such as worldwide leaderboards, ranged enemies, obstacles, and stat upgrades. There just wasn't enough time. :(

Just out of curiosity, would you (sanojian) or any other player be interested in seeing this game blossom into a full-featured commercial title, post-jam?

It seemed like a nice game, but I was useless at it, so I didn't get far. I'm just trying to figure out, is it possible to lose?
The graphics were nice, the music was catchy, and the idea was sound. Nice game all in all :D

No, it's not possible to lose. You have to get to 50 food in as short a time as possible. Getting caught in your own bomb blasts and running into enemies will bump you down 5 food, but won't kill you.

I also want to thank you all for your very nice comments, it really makes us feel like this game was worth making! :)

I really love your pixel art style. Awesome. I'd like to see you give the player's creature new abilities as it evolves.

Nice work! music is fun, movement is punchy, combat is good game-design (as in a tricky balance-part). Level-ups are in dire-need of balancing though. It takes some time to figure what the meat does, and then you lose it very quickly again.
