Assimilation by KR-Eddie

[raw]
made by KR-Eddie for LD24 (COMPO)
Earth is being invaded by a swarm of nanorobots. They assimilate everything they find allowing them to evolve into more advanced forms. Will you be able to stop them from assimilating earth before you are assimilated yourself?

You're going to have a nasty surprise in the first minutes of gameplay =P

Timelapse video coming soon. (As soon as I figure out how to turn 18.7 GB worth of avi's into a timelapse in a reasonable amount of time =P)

Update - 7/9/2012:
Well, that took longer than expected. Check out the post compo version:
- I fixed a bucketload of bugs;
- Fixed the broken English (hopefully all of it);
- Improved dialogs and scene transitions (you can now skip all of them quickly);
- And fixed a couple of rushed object placement fails.

Its really pretty looking game, I was almost shocked that you'd done 8 directional character movement, but I guess you paid the price by having such a short level.

I found the initial wave of ant things really difficult to beat. I think I'd reward the play with a health pack after a difficult encounter like that so early on. I was forced to replay the intro sequence, which was difficult to skip through.

Would be good to see you make more levels, its a neat concept for a game.

Wow this was so amazing! Too bad it ended, just as I was getting curious. If you have some free time to kill, don't hesitate to continue as a post-compo version!

Yeah, I might do some extra levels when I get the time as most of the hard stuff is done anyway. Now it's just art and object placement =)

Pity you took it a bit to ambitious approach bit it still looks great. Hope you come back for the next ludum dare and create something just as good but complete.

I thought this would make a really good demo to a game. I only had one issue with it: there is a typo when you look at the house on the right. It says "where did they all went?"
Other than that, great job!

Too short. I want more. This reminds me of project Zomboid. Cool

*Applause* I was amazed at how polished you made the game in such a short time, then it ended...expand on this! Don't stop working on it just because the compo is over!

I just noticed I forgot to put solid blocks on the barriers to the right *facepalm*
You can actually leave the level if you don't go through the gap in the concrete barriers =P

Congrats on the nice graphics.
I also especially liked the death screen and animation.
Also, I'd like the dialogs to be non-blocking (skippable) - useful when playing a second time.
Nice polish and attention to detail.

I hope for post-compo versions with new levels ;)

A good start. You should work a bit on pacingg the text a bit better. Sometimes, it was fast, others horribly slow. Make it consistently fast. A bit of strategy to the fights would be good as well, right now, all you had to do was run away, shoot, then run away some more.

Tooooo short :) But nice start of game :) I like graphics, it's a pity that there aren't sound and musics.

It's a fantastic looking game. Those 8 character directions really makes the difference. But there was broken English in some of the text (When you looked at the neighbour's door, for instance). That was my only complaint. The shortness? Better really polished but too short than really long but unpolished. And this had polish in bucketloads. I really enjoyed it, and look forward to a full version. (Perhaps it might even be suitable for the October Challenge?)

aha machinae supremacy in the timelapse video. thumbs up!
Very good effort! It looks like you have a good base for the rest of the game. I do think it would be good if the scene transitions were faster.

Hi! If you want to continue your work on this game, I have feedback for some details:
- Pay attention which keyboard layout you use for your controls. Where I'm from, the keys Y and Z are swapped.
- The control screen at start is nice, but should not disappear until the player wants to skip it.
- The player should be able to speed up the progressing of the text in a textbox. For me it was a bit too slow :)
- The moving feels laggy. If you push a the moving button a short period of time, the character doesn't move. That makes it difficult to walk through the small garden gate.
- The moving is too slow respective the enemies (or they are to fast).
- Nice step by step introduction of the story.

See you in december, but finish this first! :)

Sorry for all the broken English, it's not my first language and spell-checking was about #326 on my list of priorities.
Text speed and scene transition was a bit of a trial and error experience as it was the first time I did it, I really wanted to improve it but not a lot of time was left for nitpicking at the end.
The short time the character doesn't move when you press a key is so you can change direction without moving. It was needed as moving and aiming both use the same keys but it didn't work out all that well.

Maybe I'll release a version with some bugfixing tomorrow. Next week I'll have some time to continue this project =).

My only problem with it is that transitions are way too slow! But other than that, it was fun to play! Good job for your first LD! I hope you keep on working on this game because the story seems great!

Really cool, congrats! It is difficult to judge what it could become if expanded, since it is so short and the content / amount of features is just right for the actual gameplay duration. I definitely like the mood and the core idea. Hope you keep developing it!

That is ended quickly. It's sad because this is one of the games that are actually nicely implemented...
