One of the best birthdays by Tom 7

[raw]
made by Tom 7 for LD24 (COMPO)
This is a large-map dangerless exploration platformer. It's about the main character's 16th birthday. He's a cell and birthdays are when cells evolve.

I hit some technical snags with this one: My initial idea to use Photoshop and Flash and a map of 16,000 x 16,000 pixels caused me all sorts of headaches. Who'da thunk it? I succeeded at about 10,000 pixels square, but this ate out of my time I had hoped to spend making massive content. So the map is a little empty or MS-Painty in places and the game is silent except for the Tom 7 Special Title Screen Theme Song. But there is lots to do and I even just played through the whole game and it is winnable and I don't think you can even get stuck. You'll definitely learn a lot of accurate science on the way.

Hints, in increasing spoiler order:
- I had also planned on a built-in map system, since the thing is pretty huge. The second screenshot is the map. Use it if you like.
- If you're stuck after talking to the scientist, there's nothing else down there. You can get back out with a few well-timed rave jumps. This is the hardest part; take a look at the map.
- First visit Gene, the shellfish.
- The mine is flooded, to non-swimmers.
- With new powers, tree climbing is indicated. No reason to take the long way from above.
- The scientist detector is fooled by labcoats. That floaty thing is the way back out.
- You can win up in space. Aren't you curious?
- Everything else is just icing. Maybe I'll add some more trasures in the crannies for the jam.

Well, I suppose I was warned about getting stuck in the mines. Wonderful humor, fun exploration. Thanks for checking mine out!

Yeah, that sign is counterproductive:

- "You will get stuck"
- "Nah, I'll find a way out."
...
>_>... *stuck*

The starting song was a nice addition. It made me smile. (:

I don't think it's possible to get stuck. If you do, you can probably jump your way back out (or find an item that helps you), but if you did find a place, please let me know!

Wow, looks pretty awesome, despite the drawbacks you mentioned. I'll have to come back and explore more of the game later.

Cool gameplay, art & level design though it's a bit vague as to where the platforms/walls are in some areas. There are some annoyances (guessing you probably already know this) like what looks like text popping up and disappearing (before the main text) when you approach an object. Text skip/faster scroll would be nice too. Theme song is classic of course. Nice work :)

I got stuck on trying to get the LHC to cause a cambrian explosion. Then I looked at your map and saw that I needed to get to Mars.

I like the vastness. Filled with more content, this could be really cool.

I had a LOT of fun with this. One thing though, can you get on that freaking boat? Never did find an evolution to help me there, heh

You can definitely get on the boat, and some harder-to-reach places too. :)

I really loved playing this game. I love these very releaxed, exploration-based games. Have you played An Untitled Story by Matt Thorson? The MS-Paint style reminds me a lot of that game.

I love the nonsensical and calmly psychadelic environment and character dialogue. I think I did everything you can do in the game, I found 6 items and got on top of the boat. I'm interested in how you converted the image into the collision map for the player. Did you do it manually or was it generated somehow? Anyway, had lots of fun! :D

Great game! It was fun exploring the world, with some good humor in there too. The song at the start was great.
