Evolution Stew by vede

[raw]
made by vede for LD24 (COMPO)
Evolution Stew! Gather up as many items as you can and throw them into the DNA Extraction Pool.

Items that are rare or take effort to get are worth more points! After the time limit is done, you can check out the horrible freak of genetic engineering that you've created and see a simple description of some of its traits, based on the DNA you gave it (in this world, even inanimate objects like chairs and phones have DNA).

Some items are best used on other items. For a simple example, try using cat food on a kitten! There are a few more combinations and a combination will always yield more points than if you used both items separately.

I want to add a lot more items and combos (and maybe more level area) during the jam, so if you have any humorous ideas for items or combos tell me in the comments!

Made entirely in HTML5+JS. No third-party libraries.

It should definitely work in Chrome, Opera, and Firefox (perhaps with some audio issues in Firefox). It probably won't work in IE or Safari.

the audio chops a bit in firefox which makes the game lag just a little but otherwise ok, couldnt figure out how to get to a lot of the items though.

Kept me glued to it for a while, but finding working combos was hard enough that eventually gave up. Could only find cat + food seems to make a bigger cat or a dog. Tried combos like game developer + pizza that I expected to do something, but no luck. Flying around in the jetpack was fun and blasting away with the jackhammer. Great minimalistic graphics style. Beer totally looks like a birthday cake though! :)

Nice one! Very enjoyable and appropriate for the theme. Music gets annoying after a while, though.

As I played the game the syringe in the top right corner taunted me, is it accessible? Anyway the game was fun to play, The audio lagged a bit when loop which may have caused the hope game to lag. Still a good game!

Twisted Devotion, it's a jackhammer! Go down to the bottom and grab the jetpack, and use that to blast up to the top. Use the jackhammer to break through floors to get the stuff in the bottom left area, but make sure to dig yourself an exit path first!

This is awesome, I think I missed a lot of combinations, but was happy with where I got to.

Twisted Devolution: It is accessible, but it's not a syringe, I thought it was too.

Maybe I missed it, but the ability to end time rather than waiting it out would be awesome. I like the creature descriptions.

Cool idea, It fit the theme well, and I liked how it used a trait from each thing in end, like I put in the jackhammer and it said it breaks stone easily.

Hehehe. Fun. Great graphical style. My only issue with it is that I was REALLY bad at throwing stuff. I tossed stuff over the pit like 10 times. The pit could really use some sort of gravitational effect that sucks stuff into it.

johnfn, a little tip: if you're walking, press Z to throw as soon as you get under the dip in the ceiling. I had the same problem when I was testing so I decided to make the reactor a "room" by adding the dips as a visual indicator for when to toss items.

Great idea! I love seeing the creature at the end, and figuring stuff out like the Jackhammer and jetpack

Hahaha, mine smells of alchohol, has ludum dare written on his screen, got 1000 kittens, and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember! :D

Loved the concept, the implementation, the art style, soundtrack and mood :} great job!

Just played once, so maybe there's more pay-off after a few tries, but the end-screen seems like a bit of a let-down after the frantic energy of the rest of the game.

Oh man, this game is hilarious. Had a couple of shots at it just to try and get some of the seemingly unreachable items. Didn't know about pre-programmed combos until I read the comments.

It was a moment of coolness when I figured out how I could use the jackhammer+jetpack to dump massive amounts of garbage into the stew. =) Would've been awesome to see a bigger picture of the monstrosity you've created at the end.

Really liked the idea and graphics style. I couldn't work out how to use all the combos though. It was fun seeing what the result was at the end of the game.

Funny game. Plenty of different objects. Gameplay is of course quite open ended, but the activity feels fun and there are some things to be found and solved :)

Good game.

Interesting indeed. I played it over a few times and came up with some ridiculous stuff, lol. I would have liked more time, but I can see that you limited it so as to allow the player to see some of your creations that actually change into something. I was too ambitious for that, though, so I never saw a 'big cat' or a 'big dog' or anything like what some people in the comments said.

Cute game! Seeing the different traits your final creation could have and trying to find combos was a lot of fun. I was disappointed that chili peppers + dog = chili dog didn't work.

Haha, this is hilarious. I spent so long trying to get Cthulu out of the pit until I got it... Nice little puzzle there. Great job.
