Coin-Operated Afternoon by Pierrec
IMPORTANT, READ THIS (it's for your own sake):
This.Game.is.HUUUUUUUUUGE!
Like...369MB...ZIPPED! (No setup though, just unzip and run the Playsomething.exe. Run winsetup.exe to play windowed)
So it mighttake around 20minutes for you to download it. (And one more to unzip it) Try the two mirrors, pick the best.
"-What ?! 20 minutes ?! What am I going to do during 20 minutes ?"
Errr...I don't know, maybe you can try some other games. I heard there are plenty of them around here.
"-But why is it so huge ?!"
Because it's a stop-motion animated game that contains things you won't find in any other games, like :
- 15 different endings
- Stunning photographic animations
- Pieces from more than 20 boardgames (will you find them all ?)
- 2011 photographs (the last one was too offending)
- Hellboy on a poney
- Torrid sex and crossword sex
- Insane violence and sane violence
- As much strategy as tactics (and you might find an interstellar battle)
- Orcs, zombies and panties
- Silly dialogs
- A subjective typology of boardgames gameplay and their subtle impact on sociologic relationships, personal development and flat-wasting.
- Oh yeah and pixels too.
You'll have to make a boardgame session evolve through the dialogs.
We had A LOT of fun making this, we hope you'll have some too!
(Oh yeah...and no sound. Maybe in a future version)

It looks really cool!
Tried to increase the memory to 100MB, but didn't help. If there's logging going on, I'd post it, but I couldn't find anything.
A shame.
But i don't understand what it has to do with evolution theme...
Nevertheless game is really good.
From a technical side, I noticed in the credits that the you used GarageBand in making this so I'll assume there was supposed to be sound. Not sure what the problem was, but the game was completely silent for me.
A side note - I also did not hear any sound.
Great job!
"Why is it so huge srly ?" :
Because a stop-motion game implies lots of pictures, in this game there are two thousands of them. Each pic is around 200ko, do the math...
maybe we should had use smaller pictures, we thought 640x480 would be small enough :/
"I see Bandcamp in the credits but I hear no sound, why ?" :
Jay, the third member of team 111 was supposed to make the audio but because some internet troubles and lack of time, we weren't able to implement the audio. The Credit screen was done before that. We will probablmy make a post-compo version with audio though.
"What about the evolution theme ?"
We thought it was pretty clear, but obviously we failed. At first we wanted to make a stop-motion animated Grow-like with boardgames. It would have been a very evolutive gameplay. But progressively, we changed our mind and made this.
We thought the evolution would be felt in the evolution of the character's relationships and the evolution of the games themselves (a coin turning into a pawn, a board turning in another board etc...). Obviously it wasn't enough ^^
Nicely done (I'ld like a version with sounds !)
What's the boardgame in the submarine called?
Lots of really funny things; could have benefited a lot from a few tweaks to make it easier to play. Mainly the addition of skippable cutscenes - it was a bit annoying having to see the intro every time I replayed (AGS provides StartCutscene() and EndCutscene()).
Regarding the size, did you try using the 'compress sprite file' option in the editor?
I'll try the compress sprite file technique though.
I still have a lot to learn on AGS! Cool!
This games isn't 400mb. It's 1.14 GIGA-FRAKKING-BYTE.
Ahem. Whatever. The game!
Impressive work. How many pics are in there? I wonder. Sadly the nature of it precludes too much interactivity. Still cool though!
You should expand a bit your toolset/knowledge though, you could have made this weight a lot less with some clever code tactics. Also I have to say I don't see the theme clearly either.
Also, did you actually drink all that vodka or was it a different bottle?
Also, poor Monopoly.
I'm so honoured that the creator of those games I liked so much enjoyed my game >_< Thank you for playing!
@Matthias : 2011 pics. We wanted to make one more to fit the years, but were too exhausted.
@BNeutral : The vodka was fake, the rum wasn't.
@Ragzonken : May we steal that description ? ^^
I don't understand the complaints about compliance with the theme... the evolution of board games is, for me, clearly presented and fairly well led by the dialogues.
In 2 words : great job !
would like to use this to make my gf like rolplay :)
Your math stated in comments sounds fishy, I say! 2011pics x 200k each should be ~400M! :P This is the biggest game I've seen on the LD (1.1GB unpacked!), which is its only flaw (smaller photos? with some light compression you could do 640x480 and 100k/pic; I doubt you could loose more by using videos though), because it tends to kill the hard drive, though I suspect this has to do with the exe-packaging. I also think that you just reached AGS limits, but too see something this interesting done with AGS is pretty cool.
I love the theme, and that every run-through is short enough to let me find all endings. I can see the evolution here, though it might be a little stretchy. Anyway, the game is sweet and has a nostalgic ring to it, even without audio (though it would add so much!). Also, I'm impressed by how interesting and subtle (yes, even the scrabble part! :P) is the use of sex in your game (not explicit, graphic, just "it's there, it's fun" kind of use). Loved it altogether (I'm biased, since I love to play modern boardgames) - it's a perfect, story-driven experience. Awesome entry!
Unlike everyone else, however, I didn't like the gameplay at all. It's just clicking through to see all the different animations; there's no risk or reward and not enough story development to give me any reason to care about or relate to these characters. I might have enjoyed seeing all the animations but I got frustrated from having to click through and watch all of the identical beginning and ending parts each time.
I guess it just wasn't my cup of tea, since everyone else loves it. Good job!
Many choices in the dialogues that change completely the game, but you have to restart again and again to see everything, it's a bit repetitive. I wish the choices you made have an influence on the evolution of the characters relationship when you return to the guy's place to play again.
