Bomb the Bunnies by Sestren

[raw]
made by Sestren for LD24 (COMPO)
Info
"Bomb the Bunnies" is a game about trying to fight back the ever-growing bunny menace. Given that they are asexually-reproducing, that means you have to act quick to place your time bombs to thin their numbers before they grow out of control. Also, with every new generation of bunnies, mutations are possible, so over time the population can get faster, gain better eyesight (for avoiding your bombs), or tougher.

Controls
Bombs place themselves automatically several times a second, so keep your mouse cursor moving to where you want an explosion to occur. The bomb will go off in 2.5 seconds, damaging or killing bunnies in its blast radius.

Confession
This game represents the result of many concessions that ultimately had to be made as a result of a very, very busy weekend that left with me with only about half a day of actual programming time. As such, I must apologize if the game is poorly balanced or rather shallow. I did the best I could with the time I had, and the result only barely represents the original concept I had in mind when I began. I also participated in the warm-up the week prior, so if you're interested, you can also check out the game I made for that at < http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24-warmup/?action=preview&uid=10343 >.

Timelapse
The screen capture stopped working about halfway into Saturday, so the video doesn't show the last several hours of work, sadly.

Post-Compo Version
This version has a much better difficulty curve and the ability to analyze the bunny population's genome with the "Gene Selector." Bomb upgrades have also been added in, and you get a random one every 250 kills.

The Genes and What They Do
Each gene is rated from 0 to 15, 0 being the lowest level of expression, and 15 being the highest level of expression.
RED, GRN, BLU : The genes for red, green, or blue fur
POW, TUF : POW increases stun resistance and makes the bunnies appear taller, while TUF increases health and makes the bunnies appear wider.
SPD, EYE : The genes for speed (evidenced by how quickly they wobble) and eyesight
MUT : The higher this gene is rated, the more likely a clone is to have one or more mutations

How to Use the Gene Selector
Previous/Next Gene: Up/Down Arrow (or W/S)
Alter Selection Range : Left/Right Arrow (or A/D)
Fine-Tune : Hold Shift Key while altering selection range
Reset Ranges : Space Bar
Toggle Selection Mode : Tab

Neat concept. Maybe it's just me but if I didn't kill most of them at the very beginning it felt like there was no way I could make a comeback.

Considering the time you had, well done

I liked the concept a lot! Probably it's really hard to find a neat balancing for it.
It was quite original to me, good job!

Congrats for finishing a game even though you only had very little time! I know what it's like! Your idea is fun and sets a great mood for the game!

Since the bunnies population grows at an exponential rate, is it possible to win at all? :P Nice job for a half-days' work!

Funny concept, hard as hell though, all hell breaks loose if you can't get them bombed in the beginning. Is it even possible to win?

I'm glad you all liked the game! I apologize for the difficulty curve of the game. I'm working on a post-compo version that I will submit as soon as I can finish it that will hopefully flatten the difficulty to a "challenging, but fair" level. One feature I'm going to implement will be some sort of limiter so that bunnies spawn slower the more of them there are.

Super fun, but maybe too difficult? I don't think I fully understand what the mutation mechanic is either? Either way, I really enjoyed it.

It seems like Flash 11.1 isn't supported for my OS.
I do have Flash 11.0, but it can't find any available updates.

Unfortunately, the Flex SDK won't let me save in a version any lower than 11.1.0. What OS are you using? Perhaps it's possible I can find a workaround for you.

Reminds me vaguely of circle the cat. Kind of fun until you win a few times.

It feels that there could be much more, but it's the same for my LD project, so who am I to complain.

The bunnies are quite cute. It's a great concept too. Shame you didn't have more time to spend on it during the comp!

Really liked the graphics of the bunnies, but don't the fact i have to kill them :(
I'm not sure if it's possible to win, but it's an interesting mechanic!

Hahaha, fun little entry. I liked all the new stuff in the upgrade (post-compo) but the compo version is fun enough to call it a nice entry overall.

Nice job with the time you had. The concept is pretty hilarious although the game could use a little more work.

It's really impossible to kill the bunnies fast enough to keep a balance. But good job!

Hooray! It's a fun little game that's way too difficult, but not impossible. :)

Good use of the theme! It just needed some way to start over after losing (or I didn't know how); I had to refresh the page to play again after losing.
