I wonder if a slightly more involved system - with more functions than just 'attaching', putting more weight on player intent, having the growth assemble less randomly - would already remedy the perceived lack of control over the results. Initially I didn't see much reason to not just hold down one of the arrow keys, since Darwin was too slow and my choice of path didn't seem to have any meaningful impact on anything.
