Winding of Isaac by TehSkull

[raw]
made by TehSkull for LD24 (JAM)
Super incomplete, sorry. This Android game was inspired by the upcoming Hurricane Isaac, as our team is based in Louisiana.

Your goal is to make a big friggen hurricane and slam it into the Gulf of Mexico.
In yellow is your speed, in blue is your amount of water. As you gather more water, you get larger relative to the map. Hot air and cold air makes you get higher and lower, which lets you gain speed, lose water or lose speed, gain water.

The white arrows manually adjust your course through the map. The blue and red arrows throughout the map are supposed to change your course and height.

It takes a careful balance between water and speed to make a good hurricane. If you get too low to the ground, you'll gain too much water and crash into the water (aka break the game). Go too high, and you'll be ZOOMING FAST, but you won't have any water.

HTML5 version coming soon.

Android developers represent! How did you like working with Corona? Was this your first time with it?

This is the second game I've put out, but neither of them I'm happy with. Corona is like the easiest thing I've ever used for game design.

Let me clarify, I'm not happy with them because they were both for LDs that I ran out of time on.

Looked good, and playing on a touchscreen was a change. I did feel uncomfortable bypassing the official app channel and it was buggy. Music was good as w ell. I am curious about corona now.

To those saying I should put it in the shop, if you want to provide me with the $200 or so to buy Corona SDK and the Google Play fees, I totally will put it in the shop.

A shame it's on android. I would have loved playing that!

Heh - nice idea but I'm not sure how to do good: each time the numbers eventually careered off into oblivion as did my hurricane into the abyss!

Can you recommend how one can get stared in Android development? I can program in Java so I wouldn't mind knowing about tutorials, books etc.

Wasn't quite sure what was going on. It would just either get really small or shoot off the screen. Music was great, though.

@Crushenator Honestly, I didn't use any Java in the making of this game. Purely Lua via the Corona SDK. I chose that SDK for its ease of use and crossplatform abilities. I do intend on learning Java for making Android games, but I think I'll keep Corona in my skillset, especially for time-limited events like game jams.

I like the idea, and the music was really good. The controls, however, were unreliable for me, and before long I would be off the map, even at slow speeds. I think you just need to readjust the map size and make the controls more responsive, and you've got a fun, cool, little game.

Interesting concept but needs a bit more work to be playable. Having sufficient control to aim for arrows was pretty muble. Pressing the letters H and C seemed to make a difference, but I'm assuming they're a debugging tool rather than part of the gameplay. The music was nice.

I'd play this, but I don't have an Android phone. If the HTML5 version comes out, I'll give it a whirl - looks cool.

For something like this, if you do an Android one, you should also put out a video for people to see the gameplay.
