Petri Dish - an exercise in Artificial Selection by Jryvn

[raw]
made by Jryvn for LD24 (COMPO)
This was inspired by the episode One Voice in the Cosmic Fugue. in the Cosmos series. I've learned about the Heike Crabs and how their shells were shaped over time to resemble the faces of Japanese warriors. I've created a simulation where cells of different hues are floating around in a square petri dish. If you hold down the mouse button and drag over the cells, they would be killed and instantly be replaced by a copy of a random cell, thus representing the offspring that would replace it. Eventually, if you're selective in your approach, you'll end up with a field of similar cells. You'll also notice that it gets easier to change the cells to their desired characteristics as you get to the end.

This project was created with help from Foundation HTML5 Animation with Javascript by Billy Lamberta and Keith Peters. I also referenced a function to convert HSV to RGB from Nan C. Schaller. Due to the nature of Dropbox, all of the source code is inside the HTML file. All you need to do is view the source from your favorite browser.

Thought it was mostly random at first then when i realized how it was working managed to kill off every cell but the greens, thus halting all possible future evolution.

Honestly not much of a game but it was amusing for a minute :)

Not quite sure how this is a game, but it was still pretty to look at.
