Star Explorers of the United Nations by chardish

[raw]
made by chardish for LD24 (COMPO)
In an unknown part of the galaxy where life evolves at a super-fast rate, how will you confront what you discover?

A dopey little shmup with a couple fun easter eggs. Can you reach both endings? (without looking at the source code?)

Controls: Arrows to move, control key to fire gun.

Classic space shooter. Evolution theme is a bit stretched towards "upgrade your ship" but good execution nonetheless.

Really fun! I love me some bullet hell! Good graphics and sound, found it tricky to hit the aliens, maybe they could have set patterns of attack and increase their number so you have to dodge more things but they're easier to shoot? I like the take on them evolving between each level depending on how well you did too, it made me want to go for the orange guys more but I found it too hard to pick who I wanted to kill!

@My Milked Eek: The aliens evolve based on which ones you allow to survive. I guess I didn't make that extremely clear. The upgrades are just a way to keep up with the evolution; the upgrades themselves aren't the evolution theme.

Thanks for playing!

I also enjoyed the graphics and sounds. A complete and satisfying 2-day game! Look forward to playing a follow-up into evolving enemy paths, bullets, and bosses with appendages or drones.

If you continue this STELLAR 2-day game, it would be nice to see telegraphing the alien moves, and some patterns with pauses or predictable backtracking. The L-moving alien never paused, which was unlike most enemies in shmups that I like.

Great retro shooter, I loved the music and the old style look. 2 things that would vastly improve the game: 1. Have more enemies on screen, and perhaps have them die on one hit, 2. The weapon upgrades are too similar, make them more different, e.g. different colors, fire shots out at different angles, vary the speed etc..

Nice game.

On my first try, i soon had to deal fith nothing but the orange guys, and tried that with lots of gunpower.
Worked well until the became too fast to see them.

On my second try i killed every creature in level 2, oops.

I think it's cool how enemies evolved, but the first weapons upgrade let me shoot a 7 wide wall of bullets, it was a bit over powered.

Good work!, but I dont understood why left arrow is stronger then right one (when both r used at the same time?)

One of my favourite games, absolutely! In one of my playthroughs I let too many betas survive and I found myself on wave 13 with ships flying EVERYWHERE!
Had lots of fun, hope you'll make a post compo version!

Really nice! Correct use of the theme and good gameplay.
After wave 1x it got kind of buggy though.

Great work!
Well known gameplay type, but perfectly evolved to this game!
The graphics are good retro style, the music and the sounds are nice to hear and top the game, but the gameplay with it's evolving creatures and the evolving ship is really great.
At the end (I had just beta ones from wave 2 on) it was like someone throws very fast canonballs around your head, there was no time to react, but to go left-right-left- etc.
Great job!

It gets repetitive too early. I played until wave 14 and all I had to to was keep spacebar down. The upgrades are not noticeable enough, maybe a change of asset would be better. I liked the concept of extinct races, though.
