First, You Take A Potato by KevinZuhn

[raw]
made by KevinZuhn for LD26 (JAM)
First, You Take A Potato is about a robot named POT4 whose sole function is to take and then put down potatoes. It is a simple life, but is it a good one?

I made this together with Chris Stallman. We used GameMaker, sfxr, musagi, and Photoshop!

There is a way to win this game. Think minimally.

Haha, this is awesome. Love the humour, the graphics, the atmosphere and the music. Can't really say it doesn't fit the theme, either.

The ending / what happened when I stopped playing to write this comment really surprised me. Really like the message there. Awesome! :D

Gameplay-wise, I think it'd been more entertaining / kept me playing for longer if the messages you get as a "reward" weren't randomized (of course that'd have to be done once you run out of messages). That way, it'd feel like there's actually some sort of progression.

I had to read the comments to realise that there was an alternative to taking a potato. Very clever and suitably minimal. Gorgeous graphics too.

Great animation and story. [SPOILERS] I love these post-simon-says games. Is there a genre-name for them I'm missing? Mondo Medicals, Simony, Pop, etc. are all great critiques of simon says.

That was brilliant. I loved the way the voice on the radio got more upset each time you stopped work.

This game has some serious charm. I love the take on minimalism both with the design and the win-game-scenario.
Fantastic story.

This was really well done, okay it's short and there isn't much to do, but it was hilarious!

Gorgeous. Sometimes the biggest changes come from refusing to participate any longer. Thank you!

The screen after the loading bar stays white when running on Linux using Wine. That always happens for me trying games made with Gamemaker - is yours made with it?

To kddekadenz, yes we used Gamemaker, and I'm very sorry that it isn't working for you.
To everybody, thank you for the comments and feedback! We're glad you liked it, short as it is.

TAKE. A. POTATO. This game was ....well....not exactly a game... but it was one of the best i played so far on the Ludum Dare! (wat?) It was a very smart use of the theme and the non-theme. Also, i easily fall in love with peoples that do amazing pixel art. So you just earned a new fan ;D

I'd make a comment about beautiful animation but first I have to take this potato.

Very nice. I should mention that for a long time I saw the text as coming from the other robot in the middle of the screen. But it didn't really detract from the experience.

Were you intentionally going for a "notgame" approach? :)

Perfect use of the theme. The only game so far where doing absolutely nothing gets you the victory. ULTIMATE MINIMALISM!

The humor is this game is astoundingly brilliant. I love how people such as yourself still seriously considered the theme "Potato" when developing for "Minimalism". Awesome stuff; would be cool if you added some audio though, and perhaps made a Mac port, because I played through an emulator (I let nothing stop me from playing this game!)

Oh yeah, that was awesome! The atmosphere, the use of both themes, the visuals and music. Just great. Sadly that you can't track how many potatoes every player took... that would be an interesting statistic.

Hey super nice design and story. I just regret the lack of interractivity even if It was the core idea I guess. Maybe a small escape sequence from the factory would have been enough.
