mini-city by shadowdruid

[raw]
made by shadowdruid for LD26 (COMPO)
My submission for Ludum Dare 26.

I coundn't test on Linux and OS/X, so I am not sure whether it works or not.

In this game you can build a minimalist city.
The goal is to make the inhabitants satisfied.

I included a sandbox, in which you can not lose the game.

The music gets quite annoying after a while :D

Other than that, a nice idea, but the implementation needs some rework, I think. It was kind of difficult to know what to do to make the people happy.

Agree with manabreak -- music gets repetitive, but otherwise somewhat interesting.

Pretty nice once you get past the first few sudden failures! It took a while to get a feel for the simulation and see how everything is worked out quite clinically, then pretty simple to pave your path to victory. Has a nice escalation - starts out really minor with just factories and houses and struggling to get a park to stave off defeat, then building up to blocks and blocks of offices and skyscrapers. End game takes a little too long once you can see that you will win until you finally do.

Didn't run for me on OS X 10.8. Does it need Java 7?

Very nice game. I felt the fame limit to be too easy to reach, though; if you just keep building plenty of parks (without bothering with the higher-level buildings) you can reach it very quickly. This also caps your city growth; I played the sandbox expecting to be able to make an uber-town, only to win (and be unable to continue) because I had too much fame. Kind of defeats the purpose of a sandbox.
