YOU MUST GET THE ATOMS by Terrabyte
This is YOU MUST GET THE ATOMS, my first ever Ludum Dare entry! You are a person that can collect atoms, which when combined correctly gives you special powers such as the ability to conduct electricity. Only problem: you're stuck in a room and have ten seconds to get out.
I made everything except for one small snippet of code for grid management and the original atoms idea (which is at ideasquish.wordpress.com) within the 48 hours!
Controls:
Arrow keys to move
Number keys to swap atoms around
Controls for the level editor are included in the game
Any extras are covered in the tutorial levels
Try and get a highscore (hint: decagon plus is good)!
I fixed the links, so the .love link should work now!

Good night :D
I had trouble remembering the atoms combinations and recognizing stuff, but it was a good experience anyways :)
I had lots of fun playing this game. Also as a fellow Linux developer, keep up the good stuff! Linux strong!
Anyway, good job :)
I started bashing keys at level 6ish, and this happend: http://i.imgur.com/y35EIfV.png
But i like the idea!
@Jan Marcano, @nek: Thanks! Do you think that some sort of reminder bar which lists the combinations would be useful?
@LittleThor: Glad that you loved the love thing and the music! What don't you understand about the beginning?
@Sergey Mohov: Do you know what level that happened in? Glad you enjoyed it! And thank you for noticing the level editor! I think that it's the best bit of the game! (I said totally unbiasedly) :P
@Morgawr: Well that was lucky, managing to mash 'em until you got it right :)
And yes, LINUX POWER!! *explosion sound with guitar solo*
@doonay21: OK, I'll add an option to the post-compo version to let you choose if it does that.
@jhelle,@josefnpat: Thank you both for your super nice comments! I've found that I missed an "if not tiles[x][y] == nil then", which is causing the error. I'll fix it after the compo, but for now it is easily avoidable by not mashing the keys :P
@motty: Have you tried compiling the LOVE 8.0 source code? That may work. Anyway, glad to hear that you enjoyed it!
Now for the fun part: criticizing you to make me feel better. I mean you do better next time. Yes, that is what I meant.
-The level design is great for the most part, but in the early levels it does a pretty bad job of teaching you to memorize how the game works. You just walk forward and win, there's no need to learn it. Then, with the little test, it just hits you: "What did that again?" More levels in a post-compo might help, so you can space out the learning of all the different atom types.
-Some things are a bit unclear. Telling me that such and such is a fan and it conducts electricity doesn't help as much as you just telling me "Hey, hitting that block with this molecule makes those walls go bye-bye."
Also, suggestion for your level editor: https://github.com/NikolaiResokav/LoveFrames
Really cool game! The level where you just go through the outer wall was a good one.
I never ended up remembering what combination of elements did what, so I would end up just bashing keys. I also never totally learned how switching atoms worked. That is, I was never sure what would happen when I pushed on of the number keys (which would be swapped with the number I'd pressed?)
I think this element combination system could be really fun. A problem is that the way that the powers are taught to the player doesn't require any sort of comprehension. As a result, I think it might be less effective than just listing the powers up front, because combining it with play in this way distracts from learning the rules.
I'd like to see a version of this without the time limit, and with more levels. Bravo on the level editor, by the way. Not an easy feat in a jam.
Aside from timing being pretty close on a few levels, nothing stood out at me as a major issue at all. Looked good enough, sounded good, used the theme, yada yada. Good stuff, I enjoyed it.
@Puzzlem00n, @alts: Yeah, the level design for the tutorial levels wasn't very good, but at least I know that for the post-compo version! Thank you for your constructive criticism as well as your nice comments :)
@Michcioperz, @leafo, @Reaperguy: Do you think that a key on the right-hand side would be useful? Oh, and thank you :)
@Icass: thank you! :3
@theholychicken: Thanks! By the way, what level where you go through the outer wall?
@SnoringFrog: glad to hear it!
There's always the .love if you download the love library from love2d.org.
Works great on my Mac.
Maybe if there was more to the graphics than colours, it might be easier to parse the instructions, but the aesthetic is cool on it's own.. I dunno..
