Racer by texus

[raw]
made by texus for LD27 (JAM)
My first Ludum Dare entry. Actually even my first game other than snakes.
Although I could have finished it in 48 hours, I decided to take a bit more time to get everything working correctly.

In this game you have to race from checkpoint to checkpoint within 10 seconds. There are currently 3 levels and you can choose between 3 different cars.

Use the up arrow to accelerate and the left/right arrows to steer.

Libraries used: SFML + Thor + TGUI

Music and car images were taken from the internet (links are in readme file).

Although the game was developed on linux, I have no experience with distributing games on linux. The linux build is for 64bit and is untested.

Have fun!

Good game, controls are a tad wonky and collisions are handled weird, but overall it was very fun and had good music!

For a first game, this is very good! But sorry, I think I have to rate the games compared to the others. And be honest: there are a lot of better entries. However, I can give you a 5 for audio!

Don't give up anyway; I encourage you to go on with game developing!

To be honest on the game as itself, gaphics are a little crude, the controls are a bit "heavy" (the cars don't go really fast, and they drift a bit like a bar of soap) and a few sfx would have been appreciable.

However it's not bad at all, considering it's this is your very first ludum dare game and your second game, and the time you had to make it all by yourself.

So congrats on your first ludum dare entry, and I'll be waiting for the next ones :)

Hi, in Linux I got this error:

./Racer: error while loading shared libraries: libGLEW.so.1.10: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Althrough I have libGLEW package already installed. By the way, screenshots look nice :)

It was compiled on an arch linux based distro, maybe u have an older version of glew?
You could try to compile it yourself with "g++ --std=c++11 src/*.cpp -Llinux-libs -ltgui-d -lthor -lsfml-audio -lsfml-graphics -lsfml-window -lsfml-system -o Racer".

The most weird car guidance system I've ever seen in a game! :)
Accidentally this bug makes the game particurarly challenging! :)

Pretty cool - nice bit of racing fun there. It's probably a bit too slidey with the handling for my taste (particularly the red car), but fun to have a drive around. Also the contrast on level 2 could be a bit higher :) (maybe it's just difficult to see on my laptop screen)

I loved it. My one suggestion would be to reduce the car's friction on turns for maximum drifting fun.

Congratulations on your first LD. About the "weirdness" - when the car looses speed or has stopped already reduce/reset some props accordingly.

Awesome game, liked the music and graphics, especially the cars. Pretty fun although the cars with low control were super slidy
