'Pillars of Life by Casey Jordan

[raw]
made by Casey Jordan for LD35 (COMPO)
Explore the world through the eyes of a philosophically-minded caterpillar. Story mode will help you learn the ropes of Pillars of Life.

I strongly recommend you play through the story mode in its entirety (7 levels) before jumping into the evergreen "mutation" game mode.

For the best experience, play the gorgeous windows version.

Controls not mentioned in game: "Enter" to restart level, "Esc" to go back to menu/exit.)

Controlling was a bit odd before I became a butterfly, but the butterfly's movement is great. Pretty fun mechanic!

Really pretty, great controls and concept. I loved the narrative and the circular game play. The difference between the controls felt like a really strong decision!

Love the idea here with the butterfly and evolution. The worm stage feels a bit week since you have to click your mouse to move and can't change the direction while doing this. Otherwise the game seems really good and also gives me this special moody feeling for some reason.

This game is really moody. The controls are very intuitive and responsive. I love how the game just tells you how you feel and how it influences your decision and perception.

That was frigging great. I love the way that the world generation is driven by player actions and really is a simulation. Really though, the drought is the pinnacle of the thing. It is a parable about limited resources that doesn't just say "we should just consume less" and instead deals with the reality that people need to eat. It was difficult, but that was because I really was having to try different strategies to get through it. This is an excellent interactive story about the cycle and struggle of life.

My only criticism is that simply trying to survive was not in itself an enjoyable thing to do. That fits the theme of the game, but after I died during the "survive for 10 rounds" section I really didn't want to go back into it again. 10 rounds is a REALLY long time.

I found it really soothing to just flap around and lay eggs everywhere. Love the game of life sort of ambience, really nice take on the theme. Great entry.

Neat! I really liked that you thought about story in relation to the design, and the vibe of the game was really cool. Enjoyed it and appreciated that you put in the Mutation mode as well.
