I made the ProofingGrounds as an experimental game about... get ready for it... proofreading. Really.

The weird but awesome insight is that proofreading sucks in ways that games rock. That was interesting enough to make the HackerNews frontpage for a day :)

Here's the idea:

1. Cooperative. It's hard to proofread your own writing, so ProofingGrounds is an online pickup game where you exchange text with a stranger.

2. Real-time. The chat box transforms ProofingGrounds into a literate ChatRoulette! After hitting the HN homepage, I met a bunch of cool scientists and educators grinding away on a Saturday night who were looking for some help & entertainment. It's like having to go to work at 2am and bumping into a buddy you haven't seen for awhile.

3. Competitive. You submit corrections to your partner's text and they help you back. You rate corrections on your text as they come in, and to score points, your corrections must be accepted by your partner. Giving edits to someone in real-time and seeing whether they agree really incentivizes you, and even more so when talking to them!

Put together, ProofingGrounds was a fun experiment to combine ideas in crowdsourcing, gamification, and real-time collaboration. It makes proofreading faster, more effective, and surprisingly, kinda fun.

1. Put in your name & hit random to find a partner, and then submit some text.
2a. Corrections appear on your text that you accept/reject.
2b. Click on your partners text to edit; you gain a point for every accepted correction.
3. Either player can end the game: player with the most points wins!
4. Use the chat box to meet your partner, get advice on your love life, and provide more high-level editing feedback.

If no one is on, open it in two tabs and use different emails for each one.

0.0 woo that is something. I like the idea of coperative a-sincronus game, especially per iphone, you should add more gamification to it to make it fun like draw something.

add points, helps, badges time limite challenge and thing like this.

Hmm..

So this is basically a learning game.
Fun to see something else, but I can't really fake
that I like proofreading..
