Pyramid Breaker by DifferentName

Break Stuff! Buy Upgrades! Pyramid Breaker is a brick breaking game with an egyptian theme. I'd like to do more with the upgrade options later, but with the 48 hours I focused more on effects to add a bit of juice to the actions.

Arrows to move Left and Right.
Spacebar to shoot a Scarab Ball if you have enough money to buy it (the first one is free).
Click the 1 or 2 key to buy upgrades.
R to Restart.

UPDATE: Added HTML5! Still haven't figured out the missing sound in IE, but it seems to be running pretty well overall. The Windows version works best.

Well! I thought at first it was a simple arkanoid/block breaker game with a cool style, and then I realised I could buy upgrades, and add more 'scarabs'..

5 minutes later, THIS crazy awesome chaos (http://imgur.com/a/MFXbN) is what happens! Literally standing still would be enough to deflect hundreds of scarabs that would get exponentially more scarabs, that I could then pay to make cheap enough that they actually gave me money! Every block dropped another scarab! It was amazing!

I'm not sure if this was intended as the end game, but I think it is really enjoyable to become over powered, to make that much progression in a short time, to 'break' the game...

Is that why it's called 'Pyramid Breaker'?

Anyhow, I had a great time, thanks for sharing and well done!

Coool! The amount of scarabs on screen is crazy after a few minutes haha. I guess you can only lose if you are out of scarabs and have no money to buy new ones?

Digging the graphics! So fluid and well polished. Hitting the critical mass is so satisfying, even if it's short lived thrill.

It's really fluid for a gamejam. I don't know how people do that, or if gamemaker simply give devs superpowers

I got how to play right away and it seemed pretty polished. Good Entry! It seemed a bit slow at first but did escalate once i got multiple things i had to manage bouncing around. I like the broken affect when I hit a tile.

@LindenHoltWhittaker I'm glad you liked the chaos! I planned for the upgrades to be overpowered leading to a bit of chaos, but the feedback loop that happens was an unexpected surprise! I didn't realize that was going to be an end game, but I'm happy it is.

@kraiom Thanks! I've only ever made games in GameMaker and Flash, so I don't know how much extra work is in other methods. Mostly though, I think it's just practice making games, especially in game jams.

Nice Art Direction! I believe you have set a strong base for what could very well become a game we could see soon on Steam, Android or iOS. My suggestion would be to add more levels (with different backgrounds and blocks designs), more scarabs sizes and colors (with unique properties) and enable users to submit their score to a worldwide leaderboard. Make sure to keep us updated with the development of your game!

Very cool game! I also failed to see the possibility to upgrade at first, but the game made fun nevertheless.
After I started upgrading I soon discovered the following equation:

Simple Brick-Breaker Game + Overpower-Upgrades = Perfect Chaos Fun Game!

It was so satisfying to see my army of scarabs grow! After the point where you get money for 'buying' scarabs all hell was let loose!
It's a shame that the time for reaching the 'overpowered state' is far too short.

More sorts of scarabs and level in a future version would be very cool! :)

Simple but funny! Maybe you can add diferent kinds of Scarab, blocks or skills to make the gameplay more diverse. Nice work mate :)

Good fun. I loved the chaos at the end too - it makes me happy to hear that it was serendipitous.

I guess my critique is that, after a certain point, it didn't feel like there was much of a challenge. It was fun to get more powerful, but it'd be nice if there was a ramp up to the difficulty as well - maybe the scarabs could move faster or more chaotically?

The idea of a block-breaking game with upgrades like this is really compelling - I agree with others that there's a lot of potential to expand this if you're so inclined!

Nice arkanoid game. I enjoeyd the game untill I was spawning every brick of type (scarab brick) Then the game dropped frame rate and I did not have to do anything to get more score. Please find this video attached http://take.ms/OKr9Q to see it in action. This totally ruined the difficulty. But the sounds and graphics are fine, Sometimes I was able to bounce the scarab from my foot or body, I dont know if it is a bug or feature.

I would like to see some modification bricks for the scarabs, which would modify the gameplay.

Really nice job.

It is always nice and fun to try out breakout clones.
The graphics and the mechanics are really solic, and the money and the purchasal of improvements make it different from the original.

The main problem I see is that you can purchase the upgrades without limit, breaking the game really easily! (I ended up with so much scarabs that the blocks couldnt spawn fast enough lol). Anyway, really fun, keep up the good work!

Fun game, and nice graphics. It was really funny when I got so many scarabs that the game broke.

It would be nice to see some different scarab types, for example if some are slower or faster, or can only take a max amount of hits, or if they explode on impact and destory neighbour tiles. You could also consider some upgrades for the character, for example move faster, cover larger area, or other abilities to help bounce back more scarabs.

Nice simple game. Adding some bonuses wouldn't hurt, though.
And it is too simple, with enough of second upgrades it is possible to just stay at one place. New blocks just breaks immediately after spawning (https://i.gyazo.com/cce942bf0859e0cb53f77a96f8349bae.png).
