Runes of the Ancients by squirrelbot

[raw]
made by squirrelbot for LD36 (JAM)
Runes of the Ancients is a wave-based upgrade defense game. You have discovered an ancient temple with runes that can increase your skills. But the rest of the world wants in on this discovery. Fend them off all you can find!

---

Click to shoot, hold down to draw bow back farther.

Game works best in Google Chrome, due to a specific CSS property.
The game will still work in other browsers, but the UI will be blurry.

Strange things may happen if you resize the browser window while playing.

Enjoy!

I ended up just rapidly firing instead of drawing the bow as it seemed more effective lol. Also, that's some p solid pixel art.

The art is good.. butit would look better if the arm actually moves with the direction you want to shoot also the arrows go straight thrue the huge AI :) I love the music btw!

Cool entry! :) Just as Xero560 I started rapid firing because that is way more viable. Because of that the draw speed upgrade felt a bit useless. Also it seems like the arrow is not moving towards my mouse even though the arrow is going straight which seems a bit weird. Some feedback while hitting enemies would also be nice because now it feels a bit weird.(Either some knock back, hp bar or something else) Still, well done!

I tried to play on Chrome but no enemies appeared! I like the look of it and the voiceover but unfortunately couldn't play.

Very simple and fun - 10 minutes of it :)
Effective music and funny sound effects ;)
Nice Pixel Art on the main character.

It has a progress and I was defeated on wave 10.

Nice to have upgrade sistem but I felt it was kind of unnecessary. I could see the game progressing on aim and enemies sensitive points. But that's just me.

Bugs:
- During the introduction audio track you can shoot arrows
- Last wave showed some slowdowns ... maybe too many arrows on the floor (nice touch though)
- My arrows turn invisible at the same time... May be the problem

Fun entry and suited to the theme. Keep it up!

I like these kind of games. Loved the "BLARGH" sound effect when one of the slimes died.

As others have mentioned, the time you draw your bow should have more of an impact. When you quickly press and release, you still get a pretty good shot. I feel like instead you should've made the arrow just fall down when there's close to no loading time.

I also second the bug that you can just fire a bunch of arrows while the intro is playing, and they all get released as the game starts. Not a big issue though.

Overall I think you did a good job :)

Cool concept, good art, music works well with the game.
I had the same bugs as SamuelSousa did but overall it was fun to play.
Well done.

The start was a bit slow having to wait for loading then through the monologue. Could have had the monologue play during the first wave and reduced the sfx volume underneath.

As for the gameplay, I just spammed the bottom right corner with arrows. There needs to be some necessity to drawing the arrow. If the arrows were physicsy and dropped if they weren't shot hard enough, for instance.

Lots of good uses of sound and the game felt fairly complete. Good job.
