Can you build a cooling shade against the burning sunshine... and build a proper signal fire?

OBJECTIVE OF THE GAME
- Build a really good shade (it determines your score) and build a visible signal fire that far away passing ships can spot from the distance.

HOW TO PLAY -- THE SHORT VERSION:
- left mouse button click picks up & drops
- right mouse button click uses the item
- When carrying an object: mouse scroll rotates objects (hold shift key too to change direction)
- When carrying an object: Q and E rotate object too (hold shift key too to change direction)
- ASWD to walk, SPACE to jump

TIPS & SPOILERS:
- Axe is very useful, try picking it up & right clicking objects with it
- Wood can be split several times
- Right click when carrying wood does something useful

Creative concept :) The controls were rather difficult, it took me several tries to pickup items. I didn't get any shade done, baaah. :/

Fun concept. With a bit more polish, this could be super addictive. You might consider just having some way to hang on to your tools. I could see myself easily losing the hammer.

Very interesting! It might be helpful if the player could carry more, ie more than one stick at a time (though maybe I was missing something.) Good job!

Very innovative but could you supply some more instructions? I try to build a shade but it can't get any shade-points... Also I didn't figure out how to light the fire. I guess I'll die on that island.. :)

Interesting gameplay, I enjoyed it. I like the textures in particular. Controls aren't very responsive so building something is very hard.

Nice game. Quite difficult to drop the wood on the right places and the palm trees seemed a bit too heavy (displacing my boat for instance). Very nice graphics. Also had to restart because it suddenly became super dark and I forgot to make a fire (allthough the title was a good indication I would need to do this :)

another very creative entry! i really liked the desert island/finding stuff concept. i only got 3 shade points but i set a lot of stuff on fire! also it worked really well on linux without missing any librarie or anything which is rare

Very nice work! I was a bit confused about how to get more shade, though, I stacked a lot of leaves but it didn't seem to do anything. But other than that and a few weird physics glitches it seemed really promising :)

I really love the concept! To begin with the controls seemed a bit hard to get used to but actually after messing around for a while it was very straight forward.

I think it has bags of potential, I'd really love to see it extended into a fully fledged castaway sim! :)

A snap-to system might help building quite a bit! Or a free-roaming camera when placing an object? Really great concept!

@manabreak: thanks for testing! picking up is ... yeh, it's very much "pixel hunting". Especially for the smaller items. There's a ready made shade - the large tree on the isle. That's for you. :D

@RARoadkill: cheers

@olkeencole: excellent idea. Currently you can throw some things (that have no other use, just right click when holding em). I actually wanted that ppl could lose their tools easily... it's actual danger in survival situations :)

@kmakai: yeh, definitely. didn't have time to add that feature, but there's the "right click to throw" (certain items) that helps a bit.

@bitserum: do you mean shelter building... or what?

@mikhog: yeh, you get shelter points by going under a shade and staying there for a couple of secs. To light a fire, try small sticks or chop some firewood (use knife to palm trees... several times) -- and light them using the matches on the beach. Thanks for testing.

@fullmontis: I got textures from unity + some asset store, didn't make them by myself. What you mean by "not very responsive controls"? I guess you mean that the system doesn't tell if something succeeds/fails (always)

@simon02: Yeh, I didn't adjust the masses correctly. The leaves are way too strong too. And.. boat has just one box collider, so that's not in the shape of the boat. And yeh, you gotta have fire during night time if you intend to build anything... :D

@capnramses: thanks for playing! 3 shade points is really good actually! I think I got max 5 on my latest build :)

@JimmyBoh: Yes, I was thinking this a lot (10 minutes or so :D) and decided to go with this current style. Free-roaming would be good, I thought about that but decided not to do that (just for the time/schedule reasons). Thanks for playing & commenting!

The sandbox nature of the game was a lot of fun. I couldn't really figure out whether I was making any progress towards shade points or a signal fire, though.

The controls could be better (I personally found it confusing not to use mouse1 for using items as well as picking them up, and would preferred a keyboard key to drop items. Probably just conditioning from most first person games).
Also having to drop what you're carrying to take something else makes the progress really slow.
But I really loved the feeling of needing to build a shelter and survive (especially without any sort of immediate danger from monsters etc) I'd love to see more of that.

@bitserum: I had 2-3 different ideas on how to handle picking up stuff, and since I wasn't certain which one would be good... I used the famous "first idea and let it be that way for now".

Naturally there eventually wasn't time to do the changes... but yes, totally agree with those comments.

It's interesting that you mention that you enjoyed the relaxed way of building. I actually *had* hydration/energy status that would go down fast unless you were in the shade, and I even planned death there.

...but that felt somehow wrong and didn't feel good and I removed that portion of the game, leaving only "build what you build + you can win when you want if you know what to do" mode there. Especially with clunky shelter building controls, time pressure would have made it more annoying.

In a larger game to combat "boredom"... me thinks there should be some sort of conflict or threat eventually.

Anyways, thanks for testing & feedback. Most appreciated.

@dylanwolf: you can get shade points by going under the stuff you built... and stay there for a couple of secs or so.

To build a fire, you need small sticks or to do some serious wood chopping

It's a bit too difficult in its current state, but I'm sure it could be good with some polish. Nice assets by the way.

Items clip through much of terrain, lost my matches. Smoke from fires sometimes appears a few feet away. Do i ever get saved, or is it just a stay there and pretend. Leaves should give off shadows.

Interesting idea, island is really looks great and alive.
But why it allows rotate items only in one axis? It would be 1000 times more comfortable if we could rotate items in two (or maybe 3) axis.

...smoke indeed does that. There's possible to get saved if you start fire on higher ground. Leaves indeed should have shadows.... I guess some of them not :) Thanks for testing & feedback!

@praporomsk: you actually can rotate in all axis. Try using mouse wheel up and down. Also try it with the shift. If you first rotate object 90 degrees, and then try rotate using shift you can cover all 3 axis. thx

Very ambitious as a game that is made within 72 hours! No sound is kind of a pity, though. Could have added some easy ambient sound such as sea wave sound, sea gull's sound and then the game will have much more mood! But overall, 5 out of 5!
