Mind over Matter by kneeko

[raw]
made by kneeko for LD30 (COMPO)
Can you draw an octagon while doing arithmetic? See how well your two worlds are connected.

Controls:
Click and hold to draw.
Type answers with numeric keys.
Space or return to clear your input faster.
Escape to quit or restart.

Linux users will need the LOVE packages available at https://love2d.org

Notes:
I've added a patch post-compo to allow for numpad input and fixed a startup crash.

Nice job, very unique take on the theme. Though I wasn't very good at it, I guess my worlds aren't very connected.

I like your interpretation of the theme. At first it was difficult, but after a few tries I got the hang of it.

Awesome game!
The graphics is so clean and beautiful, the background music also fits the overall feel.
The game is very interesting and innovative. The combination of the left brain and right brain is mapped to the rational world and emotional world, or, the mathematics world and the art world.

Great job!

17 isn't too bad for a first go, right..?
I thought I'd have more trouble than I did.
Nice unobtrusive sound effects.
The number pad didn't work for me though, is it supposed to..?

Thanks for the nice comments everyone!

Xeke_Death: that was unintended (my keyboard doesn't have a numpad) but I don't think I'm allowed to fix it. I'll patch it if I can get confirmation that it's OK.

I get modules/SceneManager.lua:26 attempt to call setLineJoin

any idea to fix it?

Which platform? It sounds like you might have an older version of LOVE installed. If you don't mind getting messy and would like it to run, you can download the source and comment out that line (26 in modules/SceneManager.lua, comments are '--'). I will fix it tomorrow if you don't mind the wait!

Argh, multitasking. Creative take on the theme. It has a very polished feel to it. Pretty hard!

Can't play :(

Error: modules/Background.lua:32: bad argument #2 to 'draw' (number expected, got userdata)

Well that is definitely a unique idea and it messes with your head in a good way XD.

Maximum score was 18 (nothing impressive) but dear GOD some of those problems just don't work out with drawing makes it feel so hard (yet they are so simple in truth).

I liked the sounds and the music as well as the graphics, everything seemed really cool and easy to understand.

Well done! :)

pjimmy: Which version of LOVE do you have? That line uses a function new to LOVE 0.9.0.

Wow, this entry is both really unique and really well polished. I am terrible at doing math under time pressure so I got the majority of my points by doing the drawing. After a while I found the tactic of trying to type in the answer during the small loading time that the drawing has when you complete one of them.

I could actually see this being used in a school to help kids get better at math, games that offer a competitive aspect offer great motivation to keep improving your score. I think that this is the highest or second score that I have given a Compo entry, Well done!

For something that's kinda simple in style it works so well. I spent forever trying to figure out a calculation as I was too busy connecting the dots. Works really well! Also the art is super simplistic but works well too :)
