Musical Trade Route by ceosol

[raw]
made by ceosol for LD30 (COMPO)
The source is available on stencylforge.

EDIT 8/27/14: Added mouse/tap press to the keys so you can spam the same keys instead of having to drag. Updated the android version to the post-comp version of the game. You can still play the original comp version on android by not choosing "free-piano mode".

EDIT 8/26/14: I had requests for a free-piano mode. That is available now in the post-comp link on newgrounds. Also, you can use s through k and e through i (except t) to get a more realistic piano feel. Both sets of buttons work

EDIT 8/25/14: I had originally had an autosave that was broken. That should be fixed now, nothing else changed in the game.

EDIT 8/25/14: I uploaded an android version of the game into the google play store. It is the same version as what is in the web. It should provide a new experience playing on a phone/tablet :)

The LD theme was connected worlds. I took this two ways. The first was the obvious connecting planets through space flight. The second was more abstract connecting the worlds of music and poetry. I hope you enjoy it!

You can play the keyboard using 1 to 10, - and =. Mouse scrolling over works also. The object is to travel to all of the worlds spreading your musical talents. You will be rewarded with gifts of poetry. You also get to hear the song you created at the end of the levels :)

*I made newgrounds medals. I had to take out the save feature. It was resetting all of the planets for some reason.

**I added a hard mode, still before the compo ended. It is tough, try to fly around easier areas to get reinforcement before moving towards the end.

Definitely innovative, although I suspect I may be tone deaf.

At least with this game, you do not have to be a great musician to make music :)

Thanks for leaving feedback!

I like the idea and its execution.
Are the asteroids random or did you try to influence the final melody made by the player ?

I'm found of the map tune.

Thank you for the comments. I made the asteroids random just to mess with people try to play full songs. It would be pretty awesome having asteroids coming out in a certain order to create an actual song :)

Played this on a Nexus 7 (2012) and it worked long enough to get an impression. It crashed after spamming the keys for too long though :-\

I loved the menu music, which I thought was a good twist to scifi. it set a nice tone.
However I thought the actual game didn't reach the overall quality of the menu.
Hope to see more from you in the future :)

I like the gameplay, but my piano skills seem to have massively deteriorated...

Hope there're more musics, it's a little dull to have one BGM for a musical game.

Interesting game concept, but the sounds really hurt my ears for a music related game....

At least in the web version on Firefox, it felt like the sounds were a little delayed after the key presses.

Neat idea though! With some more music, this could become some sort of rhythm game.

Great innovative idea. I like that you have to compose music to have a save trip.

The hearing the song you played shtick is what made the game really work for me. Without it it would just be annoying, but hearing it afterwards makes me feel like i created something! Also it made the game hilarious :P

I didn't like the gameplay but I like the concept of the game and that the idea was well executed.

A great idea! I wish there was more content (like different ennemies) The fact we can listen to our tune after each level is a nice touch

cool concept, and I like the ship design!
It would be cool if there was an bad tone that break music when an asteroid hit the ship. And different weapon (that might be different ranges of notes...).

Cool concept, but it's very hard to figure out what button to push.

Even in the comp version, you can use the mouse and drag over the keys :)

The concept is brilliant, but the graphics could look a lot better. I think the game is actually quite fun but if it were more polished I'd be excited it to play. Good job!

Mixing a space shooter with a musical game is very creative. Also, the songs at the end of the level didn't sound as bad as I'd expected, lol.

A piano-spaceship is a kinda strange idea, but it works quite well! To bad the levels feel repetitive. The music playing back add some uniqueness though.
