Compass by leffe108

[raw]
made by leffe108 for LD36 (JAM)
In this game you run orienteering from your desk.

Controls:
- Arrow keys
- M to toggle map

How to play:
- You start at the triangle at the map and you want to take the controls in the order as shown in the map.

Map legend:
* green: dense forest
* white: less dense forest
* yellow: open area (actually has wheat on it in the game)
* black dashed line: path
* black dot: stone

Notes from development:
- I made my own 3D-ish engine using cos/sin and some other math as part of the entry. But by no means is it a perfect 3D engine. But I think it works well with the theme Ancient Technology.
- The game was made according to Compo rules only with the exception that I couldn't start working until Sunday due to taking part in an orienteering competition. :-)
- The game was made in about 10h so it is a bit shallow in number of levels (only one).
- The game is a bit heavy as browser game with some 5k trees with very little optimization.

I always like in games when you have to actually read the map instead of relying on a minimap. Obviously an orienteering game is quintessentially this! Here, it's this, but on some strange psychoactive drug thanks to the home made engine! It would be interesting to see the source to have a sense of what is going on, because it's really strange, but it has its charm.

I will put it up on github soon, but until then the source is sort of available as it is written in JavaScript. For example the 3D-drawing is in drawObjects in world.js: http://junctioneer.net/compass/www-ld36/js/world.js

I agree with Rico: the home-made engine's peculiarities help to disorient the play somewhat, which makes the orienteering a real challenge! Neat little game. It took me about 3 minutes to finish the course the first time.

Nice idea, I found it a bit hard to get anywhere near the checkpoints, almost like I was looking at them through a fisheye lens. I like the idea though, gj.

Really, really cool. Very nice disorientation game! My children can play this - it give them headaches and they wanted a puke. :D So much fun to play and watch others plays. And the idea - very clever. Nice job!

i LOVE the visual effect, its really cool, especially when in woods, but at the same time it also make me anxious and unconfortable for some reason
for these reason, the "perspective" actually make it to follow the map a bit harder than it should be
