Oooover the double rainbow (Baldaquin IV) by Marcellus

[raw]
made by Marcellus for LD30 (COMPO)
PRESS E TO SWAP BETWEEN WORLDS

TO GO TO THE TOP WORLD, PRESS E WHILE JUMPING

My idea was to make a game with 3 kind of games inside, all linked together.

A shmup
A top down action rpg
A platformer

The game in it's state CAN be finished but it's not very interesting.

A lot of features are missing and I'll need some good comments to add them.

I wanted colored blocks to be lane specifics between the middle and bottom worlds,
Enemies in the top and bottom world that can shoot on the second one
Some kind of powerups to collect in the bottom world
Some good puzzles to solve (there's only one interesting but no feedback to help you solve it, so here's one : "the red key is in the red lane"
More animations, sounds, better graphics, a real music
Multiplayer mode (but I lack programming skills for this one)

Yeah It was way better in my head than on the screen

The lack of time was strong in this LD, but I'll be ready for #31.

Thanks for playing and commenting.

Pretty crazy game! Loved it!

Really nice concept, but it's pretty confusing with some parts of the astetics like that you should shoot hives in space to get chocolate. And that you change between a bug a tornado and a dust cloud (I think)

It's a caterpillar, a cocoon and a butterfly. But thanks for your comment.

Took me a while but I finally figured it out! The concept is very interesting and a nice take on the 'connected worlds.' But it was tough to see how they were connected at first. The color palette could've been a little less harsh on the ol' eyeballs too. I got to the first key and died, which puts you all the way back at the start, so I'd say the game is pretty tedious. Also, the 'game over' screen is downright frightening, lol. Anyway, it was... unique. Enjoyed it.

Nice concept, and good humor. Wasn't interested enough to finish.

Awesome, awesome idea. Only wish you had more time to pull it off. Hitting a black hole was kind of punishing and put me off of finishing it - but great idea.

Nice take on the theme! I would like to see this fleshed out some more, I think it could be a pretty good game!

What a crazy game! Takes a while to get to grips. Having to restart after touching a whirl is nasty. Especially as you are prone to hit them when jumping up.

Works fine in IE 11, but boy, HTML5 does make fans spin. The future I tells ya!

Weird game, It could have done with walking you through the first step or introducing game concepts slowly.

Yes I have to admit the mechanics are kind of confusing. I wanted to do some kind of step by step tutorial but had no time for it.

Interesting concept, bit too unforgiving to have to restart when you mess up.

I like the concept of combining 3 genres, and everything ran smoothly.

Funky game. The music sound effects were a little jarring though.vvvvv

Interesting mechanics for connecting the worlds. It's extremely obtuse and unintuitive to figure out. But when you start getting it, the game starts to click.

I tried to make the most complete tutorial but it was not enough it seems.

Like the concept, though the game was a bit confusing. I didn't play very far since I kept dying to black holes when I switched worlds. A pity there weren't any checkpoints...

As I understand it, each stripe of the rainbow represents an alternate platform world - as some advice, it might be better to only make a few stripes available at a time so the player has an easier time understanding (and this way you can make each stripe have its own platform level without things getting too confusing!) For example, block all but two stripes to begin with and then slowly make more available as you progress. The shooter segment is also really interesting how it exists to get blocks for the others, which is a really cool idea! It's a pity then that the action RPG bit is a little bit underdeveloped. What I'd like to have seen there is some form of mechanic to help the shooter segment - like you get powerups/"options" for the shooter segment when you kill monsters in the top-down segment.

Just my thoughts - as I said, I didn't play very far, so they may not apply depending on what happens later in the game. Either way, taking on essentially three radically different games at the same time for a 48 hour competition takes some guts, and even if it probably isn't everything you were planning you still got it working and out the door on time. I'd definitely have to say bravo to that. :)

I know I had no time to finish I know it lacks some text and tutorial I know it represents only like quarter of my will but well... thanks for your constructive comment

Nice game, I like the way the player character changes identity in each world. That is how I feel when I am in a different country, each time I am a different person. I couldn't jump over the spikes though.
