Dino Dash: Rex's Run by Mechatodzilla

[raw]
made by Mechatodzilla for LD31 (COMPO)
It's Dino Dash: Rex's Run! You're a Tyrannosaurus Rex so it's going to take more than some aliens, flying saucers, and a mysterious lake of fire to take YOU down! Play an entire game on one convenient screen!

Update: I've released a post-compo mobile edition! Hit the mobile link below and simply touch the left side of the screen to jump, right side to do the downward bite attack. Enjoy!

Notes:
Up arrow to jump, down arrow to bite. Simple as that!
Tested in Chrome and IE. I wasn't getting sound in IE. The game does have sound effects!
If you have a low (or even medium) screen resolution set you may actually need to zoom out a touch or two for best results. With a little more time I could have set up the page a bit better.

Tools:
All graphics were done in GIMP, sound effects were generated using SFXR, and all development was done in JavaScript using Phaser.

It's silly but please enjoy!

Awesome homage to the old single game handhelds. It gets insanely fast after a while, but by that point I was starting to get bored anyway, so the pacing was spot on. The burned-in graphics were a nice touch, too.

Clever, making it look like the old school fixed pixel LCD screen games

Hi there. Like the LCD style graphics, even down to the 5% alpha shadowing of elements. Great presentation, very appropriate sounds. Good emulation!

Very faithful rendition of classic LCD games. Enjoyed the clever touches like reusing the dino attacking the UFO/being carried away in the same way those games would do. Good stuff!

Excellent! I used to have one of those handhelds, and you really nailed it on the art and sound. Also hilarious premise. One of my faves so far!

Beautiful retro look, I love it! The game is fun but it freezes when I die, that's too bad. I had to come back to this page the first time around to figure out the controls. Perhaps some text on the page could help? At any rate, this was a lot of fun, congrats!

This is great!
Definitely brought me back to the "good ol'days". And the looks are top notch.

I love this idea and the execution of it! It could do with a little more polish, but it really feels like it would have been a classic handheld game from the 80's. Great art style! And due to the genre, the simple bleeps and bloops make sense.

I also appreciate the simple control scheme and design, and the UI.

Clever, with the fake LCD you literally can see the entire game on one screen, every possible game state :D

Thanks! And thanks for the great feedback from everyone. It was a really fun exercise to think and design in terms of these old LCD games. I would maybe even try it again some time.

Awesome work, great simulation of the old machines, and an awesome concept! I'd say the jump in speed around 5000 points is a bit big, I would have appreciated a smoother curve, but apart from that I love all of it! Hilarious and very well done.
