Start the Screen ! by bobombe

[raw]
made by bobombe for LD31 (COMPO)
Edit Post LD : Start the screen ! v2.0

I spend some more few time on my game so i can have more levels.
I also add some things like feedback in the firsts levels, animations on my character ...

So if you can give me your feelings on it, i would be glad :)

Start the screen !

Install : Unzip and enjoy :3

Controls : S/D Keys, arrow keys, and backspace to re-initiate.

Goal : Normally : light up the whole screen in white.
Actually : Switch on all Connectors (the red/green/blue discs)

LD31CompileScreen.exe allow you to create your screen (or level ^^).
To do so you first have to create/modify all the pictures ".png" in the folder "ressources\Ecran1".
Ecran.xcf helps to create the pictures thanks to Gimp : each layer correspond to a picture (I use a script to save all layers : https://github.com/Bobombe/Moteur2D/blob/master/LD31/Dev/LD31Game/ressources/Ecran1/saveAllLayers.scm )

I did not want to make a game with only one vue without scrolling as suggest the theme so I tried to use the theme as the context of the game. Here we are, a ... "something" in one screen that we have to repair :)

What i wanted to add, but didn't have time :
- Firs, a real level. the current level has almost nothing in. there is a good game design exercise to do here but i'm not familiar with game design (it's more level design), and i ran out of time :( . Maybe I will try in the next days !
- Music !!!! T.T
- Death : It's a feature I wanted to add from the beginning : each color has it's complementary color which will appear too but would kill us when touching it...
- More visuals (as animate my little character ^^) ...

Tell me if you make some level for my game :D and I'm waiting to your comments !

Edit : I just uploaded a new version with bug fix and little extension at the level (just a two hour work I Couldn't use at the end of the compo because of work, gosh I hate to work ^^)

The idea is pretty cool, too bad you didn't have the time to create a full level for this. Some more polish and this could be a very good entry.
I also like that you included a level editor for those who want to play around with it some more.

A shame you couldn't finished because the core gameplay idea is pretty cool.

Really interesting idea. You should definitely use this as a way to practice level design, because you can clearly come up with clever mechanics.

You've got the beginnings of a cool game here. The movement (jumping, etc.) needs more work to make it feel tighter. I wonder how hard it would be to make procedurally generated levels so that they don't have to be hand-crafted.

Its very clear that you didnt have enough time to make what you wanted.

This could be an interesting game if it was given more time, but good job anyhow.

I turned the lights on and off but couldn't understand how to progress further. Seems cool though.

Very nice concept, but you should have taken more time to design the level

A very cool idea, and I loved how the main character breaths fire when it picks up a colour.

As for things you could change, I found the controls a bit hard to use, with the character having a max speed that was a bit too high, and I don't think having him accelerate was really necessary either.

Apart from that, it was a really wonderful game, and I'd be interested in seeing a longer, more complicated version!

Nice concept. You need some form of tutorial though otherweise a lot of people will get stuck without even getting into the game. It took me quite a while to understand that i can and how to grab the fire and what do do with it. After i figured that out i managed to get the first blue flame. I can clearly see the way to go but from there it is quite hard to play on. Switching on the flames while jumping to get your landing plattform back is quite hard. The idea is very nice, but it needs a lot more polishing which would be worth it! Do so and i will play it again!

Thanks for the nice comments.

@RockhopperGames :
I know i still have to work on the character phisics even if I already have reduce the max speed ^^

@DaRaziel :
For the tutorial i tried to put it in game design : first there is just a red flame, which is surrounded by red wall ... But I may need to add a bubble indicating when it's possible to interact ...
And as I already said, I have to work on the level design for sure ! And I may try, I will upgrade my entry when so and send you a message to try again my game^^

It's a nice idea, shame you didn't have enough time to really polish it up. You should definitely keep working on it though, could be a great little game.

ahh I was confused of what to do at first D: i thought it was something related to my character being a fish with human body but it seemed like he was a color-fire dragon human fish after all :DD

For such a simple game this was really hard to work out. Heh, maybe its just me. Good innovation.

I agree with what everyone else is saying. It was a very cool idea, and the core logic has great potential. If you had more time for game design I feel that you could have really shown this.

Interesting idea, found the level design very confusing though. the controls and jumping were a bit annoying so I sadly didn't stick with it. With a lot more polish I think this could work out well. :)
