Fabulous Escape by HolyBlackCat

UPDATE: GAME IS FIXED, SORRY FOR THAT BUG
I was streaming I while coded it, and because of that game slightly lagged. And because of that I jumped higher! :D I fixed it, now jump height is always the same.
UPDATE 2: FIXED GL3.3 VERSION
I forgot to add fix to GL3.3 verison, now it's here.
UPDATE 3: FIXED SHADERS
Because some videocards complained about them.
UPDATE 4: FIXED JUMP HEIGHT AGAIN
Sorry everyone, the game was impossible to complete.
UPDATE 5: ADDED MISSING TEXT RESPONSE FOR SOME THRUSTER COMMANDS
When you activate up facing thrusters, a message appear in the terminal. I forgot to add this message to other 2 thruster commands, but now it's here.

It's a short platformer about girl who was forced to escape from police in a very unusual way. :D

It took 27 hours (!) to make it!

What you like, what you don't; please leave comments about it.
Please tell me if you can't run this entry, it's the only way I can fix it.

HOW IT'S CONNECTED WITH THE THEME: Some people asking how this game is connected with the theme.
The character is sitting on a screen with tracks 3/4 of the game time!

HELP I'M STUCK: If my game is too hard for you, look at this walkthorugh:
http://web.archive.org/web/20190317152852im_/http://ludumdare.com/compo/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/WALKTHROUGH.png
Use it only if you completely stuck.

ABOUT BLACK MARGINS: Game try to upscale itself to the maximum possible size, but by default it uses only integer scales. If your screen is too small and game can't even use 2x scale, you might see huge black margins. Try to switch graphic modes with Ctrl+Enter. It will make graphics blurred, but game will use almost whole window/screen size.

Honestly, I didn't go anywhere after falling.
I don't know why, but for me it was boring.
But there are good graphics!
And where's LD theme there?

WOW! Are you serious? No comments on this that I can see... that is crazy because this is awesome! Like really, this is alot better than alot of the other games! I like how the screen is your pc that you use as a tool! The art is mindblowingly fantastic. Great job with audio, just, good job!

Doesn't run on my computer for some reason!
"Fabulous Escape GL3.3.exe has stopped working"
Vertex shader compilation failed. ERROR:0:2: 'location' syntax error.
The regular version just complains about my Graphics card being too crappy (my graphics card isn't High End as I'm currently on my Laptop, but I do believe it should be sufficient for a platformer (All my Steam games run on it just fine))
-I'm running on Intel HD Graphics 4000

The screenshots look interesting though! XD

@Iak , oops, sorry. There was a minor syntax error in my shaders, looks like some videocards are too pedantic about it.
I tweaked shader code, now game should work.

Graphics are very nice. I don't see a clear connection with the theme for now.

Cool concept, I like the computer system as a puzzle. I managed to get the second help page, but then I'm stuck. Keep up the good work

I really enjoy this, it feels like a mix of Gunpoint and Uplink for some reason. Really impressed and I would like to see this concept expanded :D

That's prety damn cool. Just some trouble with my AZERTY keyboard, making the experience a little harder. But still pretty fun and cool to try !

Very creatively done! It controls pretty well. Despite the theme not being immediately apparent, you did quite well!

Nice graphics, nice idea, but is the theme the fact that you ride the screen to get down?
🎤 HolyBlackCat
08. Dec 2014 · 15:00 UTC
Yep it is. You ride this screen during the almost whole game.

Got it workign on my Wife's machnine. I really like the concept of typing into the machine to get the upgrades... however, it was frustrating to type "LONGJUMP" so many times after failing the jump again and again. A great idea tho. impressed.

Yea, I know. Hotkey to repeat previous command would be good, but now it's too late. :D

Excellent Game. This is a winner in my book. My one criticism is that it is frustrating having to type out the commands over and over. A history thing that you could cycle through with arrow keys would be great.

The fixed version runs fine - Very awesome game! One of the best i've seen around. I love your use of the theme.

@HolyBlackCat Also, about your comment on my game - If you want to cheat a little, holding G pressed while starting the game using Space gives you 200 lives ;)

I'm currently working on a post-LD version which starts out easier, but I didn't have the time left to add that during LD.

This was a really cool game, but the aspect ratio was messed up for me and the terminal was too small for me to read :(

Ctrl+Enter might help on small screens. What about aspect ratio, it seems to be broken on your side. :/

Really innovative entry! I liked the unique way of interacting with the environment, and the (spoiler approaching) bittersweet ending tugged at my heartstrings. Great work!

Interesting platformer/adventure game. I like the starting mood with the door knocks. Difficulty was high and some of the interactions didn't make sense to me. I felt the graphics were too small and too dark and the text was hard to read (even in full screen).

The controls are choppy, but this is otherwise a very good entry. Who wouldn't just transform their PC into a robot in case of a raid? Wiping data is tedious and takes too long, smashing it might not even work - so just take it with you ! =D

I can get tedious to repeat a command when one fails performing a jump correctly. autocomplete using tab would have been much appreciated.

Great job!

I suppose that is one way to interpret the theme =P
Interesting game, I really wish I could just press 'up' to repeat the last command entered, would have saved some annoyance in that first room typing longjump a lot.
Good job!

Great idea and pretty good execution. The underscore doesn't correspond to where underscore actually is on a Japanese keyboard, though... hard coding it to a specific location on the physical keyboard is terrible for those of us not using the same layout you have. :P

This si cool but the platforming wasn't working with my keyboard. I fell and I just couldn't make that jump. I made it ONCE but I couldnt make the second one and now I don't know how I made the first one. The whole typing concept is really cool and I really want to play it but I can't get past that jump. Argh, she just doesn't jump on the corner. Anyways, still really nice work for 27 hours and I hope to try it again if the gap becomes a bit smaller.

Unusable as-is with an AZERTY keyboard. :(
Whether I change the keyboard's layout before or after launching the game, the console would still print me the wrong keys (Q instead of A).
🎤 HolyBlackCat
21. Dec 2014 · 19:30 UTC
Symbols were hardcoded to specific keys. Sorry for that.
I wasn't even aware about existence of AZERTY layout when I was making this game. :D

Really cool game. Love the idea and the spritework for the little moving screen.

There are some things that are really unclear, it took me quite some time to realise I could get off the screen, and then again some time, to realise that those bunch of pixels are a light switch...
But after getting over the initial hurdles it's a pretty enjoyable game.

The underscore character doesn't work on hungarian QWERTZ keyboard. I replaced it with space in the exe file manually, then the game worked fine. Next time you should use SDL2 scancodes/text for layout independent input.

Anyway, it's a nice game, I liked the interaction with the computer.
