Impossible Tower by Raptor85

[raw]
made by Raptor85 for LD31 (COMPO)
Important, read the controls before trying!

Controls:
WASD to move
Space to jump
Click on tower sections on the right to swap with other tower sections, the tower is impossible to climb without doing this.

Description:
A tower climb game that, at a glance, is impossible. Shift sections of the tower around and make your way up to the top, post your best time (if you can even finish the game, it IS beatable!) A combination of puzzle and platforming.

If you get stuck in a wall no big deal, just swap pieces around, but watch out for spikes, they do not shift with the rest of the tower!

Onward to victory...and cake!

windows version is a port and only tested under WINE! Cant really guarantee it will run correctly as the engine version has not been tested on windows yet. source is included in all the downloads.

Great fun, however wonky controls do muddle the platforming from time to time. All in all, keep up the good work. TALLY HO!

ran into a crash when switching parts.

I beat it! Score was 715:45 secs. I liked it. However... I did notice that there was a pattern that I could use to get to the top. If there were spike along the left side, this pattern wouldn't have worked forever but it did. If you look at this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4BQnEaFh_gvMmdPR0pkNVZCbFE/view?usp=sharing If you number the parts from top to bottom. the very top piece being 0 and the very bottom piece being 11. the pattern I used was 6>2>6>3>repeat. Anyways, I thought it was a cool idea, and I can safely say that it ran on my windows 7 computer :)

damn, thought i caught all of those, heh. Only had a hour to make the actual tower design after the gameplay was coded so im just glad it worked as well as it did, the joys of working weekends, only get about 8 hours to actually do LD :/

good job though, didnt think someone would figure it out so fast, it even frustrated ME a bit in playtesting, lol

I think you should work on a post-compo version of this!

Very cool mechanic with the rearranging of the tower on the fly. I think the player could control better, mostly I think I'm just missing the lateral speed the character in mine has. I would love to see this with a little more polish.

A great puzzler-concept, even though it doesn't precisely fit the theme. Controls and tile collision felt a bit off though.

Great concept! But I think the hitboxes on platforms are a bit big sometimes.

Works on Windows.

Very good concept, but controls felt a bit stiff. And as you switch between two modes (walking/jumping and puzzling) the gameplay felt not very fluid.

Very good platforms generation! Cool gameplay. With more graphics, it's could be winner! I like it!

hit whats? yeah..ran out of time and had to do simple corner box collisions for the "physics", it was quick and dirty and i wish i'd had more time to do proper physics :/ all that keeps you from clipping through things due to that is basicly a cheap hack.

Pretty fun game. Couldn't really get past the first 2 floors. I had no problems running the game on windows.

Worked fine for me on windows. Very interesting concept and cool way to combine puzzles to platforming. It would be nice if you could see your character as a dot on the right in the tower sections.

Doesn't work great on win (maybe because I have a dual monitor setup?), but the idea is pretty neat!

I couldn't run the game on Windows 8.1, not even using compatibility mode. I would love to play it!

Very cool idea. On my windows machine it ran into a few problems, the resolution made me have to set my task bar to auto-hide, and when I closed it it crashed and I had to task kill. But otherwise it ran fine.

I ran into some trouble with the controls. There seemed to be something off about the state transitions between walking and jumping. For example I could run forward and jump, knock into the side of a brick with my head, and hold forward the whole time. When I landed I would be doing the running animation but not moving forward.

I had fun playing around moving the sections and I did try to climb it, but I never made it to the top.

Cool idea, just a little polish would really pick this one up!

Neat concept! The collision seems a bit off though :/

Really nice concept. I like the combination between the rump and run and puzzling your tower, but you can get stuck in blocks when doing that. And the collision detection of the player is a little weird. But it makes fun to play.

Wow, nice idea! I feel that the switching mechanic made gameplay tough in some places, but for a prototype that doesn't matter. Really cool, fun game!

Fantastic concept, a little rough in execution. I love the idea, but it was hard to keep switching from mouse to keys, and the platforming controls were wonky. A bit of a stretch for the one-screen theme, but great idea. I'd love to see a polished version of this thing.
