Ancient Meat Lovers by FrozenCow

[raw]
made by FrozenCow for LD36 (COMPO)
Get your tribe food to advance to its next technological highlights.

Also, elephants and giraffes need multiple punches.

Game is not really finished, but it's playable. No sounds, no music, no hit effects unfortunately.

Not much going on in the game itself. There aren't many art assets, but of the ones that are there it looks really good. The animals and the caveman look great, so I think it would be a cute game when it is finished.

I love the cuteness of the art and animation style. I like how some of the animals try to run away when being attacked so miss it when they just stand there and take it.

I hope that you continue creating the game and add some strategy elements to it.

Good starting point for more i would say. First thing i'd like to see is hit feedback, i did not notice the damage taken until too late :D

I always liked the idea of progress games, where you have to start eating small animals and keep upgrading. I found interesting that elephants can jump over the houses, makes it difficult without enough technology.
Better if the map is populated with more animals and stuff, but kinda cool for first prototype!

cool game, reminds me of dont starve, could use some more environment art as its a lot of flat grass. The animals could be closer too. This could be really fun if taken further

FrozenCow! <3 My story with this game:

*slowly walks away from the fireplace* *is really relieved to see the arrow to find your way back* *sees an elephant* *punches it* *elephant is angry, follows be back to camp* *tries to roast it over the fire* *does not work, die, be replaced* *punch giraffes* *sees another elephant* *runs away in horror* *gets new technologies* *slays every elephant in sight for revenge*

Thanks for making this game, it's short and sweet :) It surely would benefit from sound! I kind of expected to get more and more modern weapons, until I accidentally destroy the planet with a nuclear rocket launcher :D

Really nice but it ends too soon... Would have been nicer if you added more weapons.

Also if you get more than 4 meat at once, the extra ones disappear, you could have added a bigger limit (so going from 4 to 8?) per every technology discovered and also count the extra meat found.

The art style is so funny and cute, I couldn't stop laughing the whole time I was playing.

I was very confused about the hitboxes in the early game, as melee attack range is not really clear. I couldn't understand why I was damaging or being damaged. The game becomes much more understandable at the last upgrade once we unlock range weapon. Sadly, this is were the game becomes too easy as well and the challenge is gone. In the same time, the sensation of power it gives is awesome. Anyway that's how ancient (and modern) technology went ;)

I thought at first that I could carry only one meat. Then I got surprised that a giraffe dropped 2 and I could pick both. Maybe technology upgrade could also provide ways to carry more at once.

Nice game, though a bit easy to complete. The melee action seems a little random. My strategy was to simply spam the attack button, which worked fine. The bow rapid fires unlimited arrows, so killing animals with that is too easy. Another thing, maybe if you put more details in the background, the player gets a better sense of motion.
