Mr. Scroll by nukethepotato

[raw]

Mr. Scroll is a scrolling platformer in which the player wraps across the screen.
You use the scrolling mechanic to progress towards the exit.

Controls:
W/A/S/D or Arrow keys: Move
Up: Climb
Down: Open chest
Hold Ctrl: Lock scrolling
Space: Fire gun

The Linux version has been tested on Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit, but it should probably work on other distros.

This is my entry for the Ludum Dare 31 Jam, written entirely in Rust.
In addition, I used the Tiled map editor and PyxelEdit for tilesets.

All audio is synthesized in-game, and resembles NES-style audio
(there are 4 channels after all: 2 pulses, 1 triangle, and 1 noise).

EDIT (Dec 9): There are some "imperfections" I want to clarify:
1. Half of the chests have nothing in them. I ran out of time. :)
2. Infinite coins at the end. This is indeed the end of the game. I ran out of time. :)
3. The scrolling mechanism is pretty much pointless in the second half. I, well, you know.

Being able to lock the screen and then wrap was a really nice feature.

There is enough depth to the mechanic that it would make a cute indie platformer. The aesthetics suit it well.

This was awesome! Very cool concept, and solid execution of it. I'd love to see this idea expanded post-LD31!

I got as far as the coins. Not sure if that's the end or if I just didn't figure out what I needed to do.

Idea is so great ! I liked it, really. But it's so short ! I would love so much a longer game in the same concept. But, hey, great job !

I really liked this entry, it has a great idea and a very nice execution. I just think it's a little too short.
I like the graphics and the controls are just fine. Good job!

Nice! I was a bit confused initially, didn't know what to do with what turned out to be a drill(?), but after a few minutes of aimlessly running left and right I realized one of the ground tiles was looking suspicously different and felt a little stupid.. :)
Anyway, it is very enjoyable. I'm still not sure about the screen locking thing, it's strange because it basically means teleporting to the exact same spot and I don't see how it has any effect on anything really, except the somewhat random fact that blue chests vanish when they get out of view/change sides.
Anyway, it all added up nicely and turned out to be one of the better games so far, so good work!

I really like your take on the theme, and it would have been nice to have more puzzles take advantage of that but it seems you, well, you know. What you have is a really good start, the controls are good, the movement feels good, the concept is good, it just needs a bit more content and polish.
