Ragtown by indie4fun

Welcome to Ragtown.
In this city you will play as the sheriff who protects the city for 8 years. You must decide who gets in and who gets out in order to get a balanced amount of criminals, businessmen, goldminers or indians. If the town becomes overpopulated with one of the factions, they will take control of the town.

If you exclude someone from the city, they won't be pleased and will try to stop you by putting a bullet in your head. It is your duty to get their heads filled with lead if that's the case.

This is our first ludum dare and we're pretty satisfied with the result. Let us know if you liked it or not so that we can improve for our next projects!

___

Controls:

You've two phases:
1) You decide if the strangers enter your city or not:
- J: if you want to dissuade them, starting a duel.
- K: if you want them to enter.

2) If you started a duel:
- J: Cock the weapon: this gets your weapon ready to shoot.
- K: Shoot your weapon
- (Space): You get cover as long as the key is pressed.

Very nice graphics and sound. I didn't exactly understood the shooting from behind cover mechanics at first but I got the hang of it in the 2nd try. I also didn't understand how to get more bullets, or 9 bullets is your maximum

Very impressive for you First Ludum Dare project. Very strong and interesting visual style. The dueling was alil glitchy for me, id often get killed for no apparent reason. The evolving background looked great it was difficult to track how much of each class. Overall a great submission. Good job!

The general ideia is good but you should be worrying more about the gameplay.

Awesome game! Visual si stunning and idea great. I really liked how the city is changing. I'd only wish if there could be more types of people and more options how to interact with them.
+1 for snowman :)

Nice game, but the duels are way too hard. I couldn't win a single one. So eventually I just let everyone in... So it wasn't too fun for me.

The graphics and audio seems polished, but I feel it is a bit too hard gameplay-wise. Of course, I might just suck at dueling. :p

Thanks for the comments guys! Well, the duels are a bit hard yes, specially at the beginning. The trick is: there's a chance when the enemies are hiding behind the barrels, just be quick and press J to load/aim the weapon and then K to shoot once an enemy gets up, and then cover immediatly! When 1 enemy is down it gets easier to kill the last 2. Just aim the weapon (J) until one of them gets up and shoot! (K) then hide again quickly (SPACE) and take your time to kill another one ;) Hope this help guys!

Anyway, yes, I guess you're right, the gameplay may need a bit of polish and sometimes you don't really see how the characters affect the city. We needed more time to improve this things haha

Well, glad you enjoyed it, and nice to see that you liked the idea and the visual style. Thanks guys!!

Emkani: sorry to hear you can't play it! Have you tried the downloadable version apart from the web version?

Amazing, awesome graphics! Great idea!
Works a-ok in the browser, but I was unable to run OS X version, it doesn't even bounce in the dock, appears and disappears.

Loved it. Great graphics. But how can I get more bullets? Also the player's barrel should be pushed a bit down, it doesn't seem to be covering the player at all. Anyway, great first entry. COngrats!

Great entry, nice graphics and sound. I like the innovation on the mechanics, they are simple but at the same time entertaining and rewarding, although not suitable for a longer game. And I think you inverted the controls on the help up there, when I press J I start the fight between the sheriff and the strangers.
Could'nt survive for long though.

Juicy graphics and sound design, great work! The game mechanism is also creative, although player seems do not have too many choices, or the best choice is too outstanding some times.

The 1st level is a bit difficult, for that enemies shoot really fast before the player realize he needs a cover.

Good job anyway!

Had a little bit of trouble with the shooting at first, but got the hang of it the second time. Very simple game in a good way and I like the distinctive look a lot.

Really nice! The art style is ace. I didn't get how the duels worked at first, but once I got the hang of it I managed to get to the end! (Not on my first try though. Those pesky miners made my town too noisy!)

Spilim: glad you like it! About the help post: you press (J) to start a fight and (K) to allow strangers to come into your town, indeed! But once you start the fight, you press (J) to cock/aim your weapon and (K) to shoot. That's what I meant when describing the strategy to win duels: (K) to aim, then (J) once an enemy gets up to shoot, and (SPACE) to quickly hide yourself before they have the chance to shoot you!

hypnoticbytes: during the same year you can't get more bullets once you run out of them. You have a limited amount per year -9 bullets-, so if you loose all the bullets you will surrender until the next year comes, when your gun will have again 9 bullets. This is the right amount to kill everyone in a new year if you want -and if you don't fail your shots ;) -. Hope this info helps you!

Thanks for your comments guys! Glad you are liking our little game! :)

Buen trabajo en general.

Visualmente los personajes se salen un poco del fondo, que es fantástico y le da al juego mucha personalidad.

Muy buena la idea de representar en los edificios el progreso de la partida.

Awesome entry. The graphical style and sounds are excellent, I really like how the backgrounds changed with time. Took me a moment to realize how gunplay worked but on second try it was a blast. Haha. Excellent work for your first entry.

I don't know if it was just random, but on one playthrough I didn't seem to get almost any indians after first two years.

Fantastic game! It took me a few attempts to get the hang of the duels, but now I'm the fastest finger in the West. :P The timing is super-satisfying, especially when you manage to shoot all three in quick succession. I also liked having to balance the factions, keeping a mental note as I played - although I wasn't sure if I should let criminals in or not!

You did a really awesome job with the aesthetics; I love the visual style, and the music really hammered home the Wild West mood. To make a game that's both pretty and fun to play is a big achievement in a game jam, I think! I couldn't help but keep trying until I got a 'perfect' playthrough.

Very well done - this deserves all the praise it gets.

Fantastic entry! The game's simple, takes a little bit to get used to, but ends up being a pretty interesting game. The way the town dynamically changed each was super interesting, and made it so it was required to do multiple playthroughs to see which type of people were causing the changes.

Only complaint is that when you die, it takes ages for all the new people to move in, which adds to the irritation that you've died. In the future, a skip ability would be fantastic. :)

Pretty neat game, even given the repetitive mechanics. I thought losing a sheriff leading to temporary chaos was a clever gameplay choice. The progression of the town behind you as population shifted was also clever. I felt like I wanted to know what the actual distribution was in numerical terms, but I dunno, maybe that would have spoiled the effect.

Graphically: absolutely gorgeous. Nicely done!

Cool idea to make a game playing in the credits!
My biggest complaint is that you can't jump while pressing another key. It'd be fun to explore this concept further - maybe add a gameplay element in which the names are damaged. (e.g. decals of a gun and explosions)

That was really cool! I couldn't pass all the years but if I get time I'll try it again. It was really exciting to fear for my life while having to make these hard decisions.
I wonder if you can expand this into a larger commercial game similar in scope to Papers, Please.
