Disgolem by ocarson

[raw]
made by ocarson for LD36 (JAM)
Disgolem was made for LD36 by @OhCarson, @ghoulkiss and @Jack_Gill_SGS over 3 days.

Click dancing golems and use the arrrow keys, or W,A,S and D keys to the different beats to control them on the dance floor.

Match the same colored golems to get points and clear up some room for more!

'A golem is an animated anthropomorphic being, magically created entirely from funky ingredients, such as platform shoes, sequins, and four-to-the-floor drum patterns' [citation needed] Once every ten thousand years, deep below the surface of the earth, the ancient and forgotten catacombs of Disconia are woken by the power of ancient funky Disco beats, and the silent denizens of that once proud civilisation take to their feet, with one resolute aim; Getting' down. As a conductor of funk, take control of the Golems of Disconia and guide them to their dance floor partners, to transcend this world in a flash of flares and disco fever. Connect bigger Golem groups for more points, and become the stuff of ancient Disco legend.

Rad game! Loving the vibe!
When I saw the thumbnail I knew right away that I was in for some robotic goodness. I was not disappointed :)
The game looks and feels really good. Because of the format, it looks like it was originally designed for mobile, but the experience is good in the web browser nonetheless. Once again, fantastic aesthetics, and a totally unique gameplay!

That are devs who decide to copy stuff and other devs that have their own light. You have your own light, don't let it vanish. <3

That was a fun game, and I haven't played rhythm games in a while now. I did find myself constantly selecting on the wrong robot, so for a postjam version you could improve on that, as well as some additional sounds for the last 10 seconds of the timer.

Beautiful looking game!

This was a lot harder than I thought it would be! For one, the notes were usually off-beat from the main music, so it was really hard to get the right rhythm down. And at times, when I press it on what SEEMS to be on beat, it doesn't work.

Still, I love the mechanic of actually CONTROLLING where the golems move using the beat. That's pretty novel.

Good job, guys!

cool little game. I like bouncy characters and background! I did feel like I was pressing the key on beat but not getting it sometimes - maybe the window for a successful press needs to be a bit wider.

I needed to watch the youtube video before I fully understand how to play, however once I know what to do, it was really fun.

You have beautiful art style and awesome music. Very nice game.

It was quite hard, I think the controls needs a little polish, but it can be very fun and very addictive !
Nice job :)

Thanks for all the feedback @g12345@justinooncx @ciaodavinci @Hackingroelz just about to do a quick change to make the input more lenient and maybe up the performance a little. Thanks again!

That was a really cool use of rhythm mechanics. I loved the use of different types of rhythm (off-beats), and how, unlike other rhythm games, you don't have to hit every beat, although the hits could be more forgiving.

Love the game feels and rythm! (I everywhere love rythm games!)
So what we have: Hard game to understart how correctly play, the colors is awful (sorry, but hard to read the screen, you need work on that)
and we have a very very nice concept and game with feels !(what is rare on LD)

Good luck with you project and awesome job!

The game has a really clever mechanic so good job on that and the art and style wasn't too bad either I wasn't a massive fan of the music but it wasn't too bad. Overall it was a very good entry so well done keep it up!

The aesthetics are strong in this game, though the controls are pretty confusing. Still can't figure out why some gems go out when I try to press the key, as if I did something wrong, and so can't really rack up much score...

Also, games like these could use some online leaderboards (at first I somehow thought that the three pictures on the main screen are the top 3 players, actually XD).

Hey! Really love the bold, colourful art style and I've always thought making a music rhythm game is quite difficult, so props for making one!

I found the controls very hard to get a hold of - mostly it was not understanding that the circle was triggered on the beat, so you could wait till bar 3/4 and have longer to get ready on the controls.

Also, making the robots have different time patterns is good, but when you first play the game you have a three second window to click, absorb everything, then make a decision - it's quite overwhelming as a player to be thrown into the deep end so quickly.

Fun game and love the music. Keep it up!

Thanks for the feedback all! i've just uploaded a build with more lenient inputs, better performance, and the Arrows are labeled W,A,S & D to make things a bit more understandable. Thanks for playing! Hope these address your issues @Alphish and @Culturebosh_games

Oooooh yes, that's more like it. Got the score of 327k with 5 disco-balls. Dunno exactly where they come from (do you get one disco-ball per 5 robots of each kind, or what?), but they're neat.

200k is the 5 out of 5 discoballs score, so turns out you're a pro @Alphish :3

It took me a while to figure out how it worked, but it's a neat rhythm game! I'd have liked to see a sequence of levels that ramped up the difficulty instead of being dumped into the main game.

Fun game. The rhythm elements were well-represented, and the on-the-fly logic made for a fun twist to the standard rhythm formula. Enjoyed my time with the game.

I was a bit slow to understand that I could actually press any direction as long as it was on the time marker to decide exactly where to move the robot. After this full retard phase passed, I really enjoyed the game. What a great mix of puzzle and rhythm. Really awesome. The whole game looks and sounds wonderful. That's a really good job done here.

really disco! cool game. Basic interaction on how to move them around is really great and after a while I realized one could optimize for poly-relationships to get the best score. The corner dancers never get to move though, and that's a little bit sad. So it would be an interesting next step to the game if the disco floor kept evolving over the course of the game too... just a thought. Great music, great interaction with the music and very cute game.

Crazy game! I'm not sure I quite understood the mechanics (how would it know when to stop taking my inputs and why were the inputs sometimes disabled?) but it was definitely interesting and afaik original.

This is the craziest variation of match 3 (err... match 2) I have seen. Funny, unique, great mood/vibe. You could try to flesh this out into a mobile game. Overall, very cool.

Artistically fabulous (shoutout to emmy) and very interesting take on Match 2+. I think it would be nice if you could cancel out of the moves though, to save time.

We played your game on stream too, which you can view in here: https://www.twitch.tv/cantgetourname/v/87128748

Cool! Though It took me a while to figure out the mechanics. I thought that I should press the keys corresponding to the arrows, and then I found out that it is actually I who sets the direction .
