The graphics are not wonderful but suficient.
Goodjob :)
Definitely agree with previous posters about the controls - very slippery physics, and it was difficult to remember all the different keys to control everything!
The menus were well laid out, if a bit drab. You can definitely make some bolder design choices there.
I like the dark and dreary atmosphere though, and your main character is pretty well animated.
Would have been great to have some music or sound effects - even just BFXR sounds can do a lot to bring life to a game!
Once again, congrats!
Nevertheless it's a hell of a lot better than my first entry to this competition.
I appreaciate the effort but spamming comments is not nice behaviour. Next time try to actually play the games and provide useful feedback.
control feels good enough, quite responsive
but theres couple things you need to fix
1. its very slippery, its not your control problem, its probably fraction or force that you forget to control
2. the control for weapon a bit awkward
3. enemy didnt attacking at all...at least i didnt feel like they are attacking
and please, don't spam comment like others said, if you want to comment, leave something constructive, criticism of the game, pointing out the good and the bad thing of the game
thats why this game jam exist, for practice and feedback
Character slides and has a lot of inertia
It is not obvious you can use weapons when you walk. At first I thought I needed to stop to see the bow and then soot
first weapon is useless or I did not understand how to use it (deals no damage/no animation)
problem switch weapons, once I have the bow, I cannot go back to the first weapon, unless I press E.
Sometimes, you canh go through some sprites which were solid
sometimes I got stuck at some place, no way to escape (at the bottom of the map
do not die in holes, you can walk under the map
explain message should be located in space not in time
shaking screen (because center on character changes during the walk ?)
arrows bounce on enemies (but it is funny)
random enemy damage ?
I hope it helps and good luck for the next participation
Kudos for making the effort, but this feels too unfinished, sorry. Keep working, though, there is some potential.
Anyway... Well done for your first entry!
There is no music, the graphics are a little bit too simplistic, the character "slides" when you stop pressing the directionnal inputs, which is not really comfortable,
(By the way, at the beginning of the game you can go to left and fall endlessly, you may need to fix that later)
When you get hit by an enemy, there is no knockback, so you get hit a lot in a raw and you die in a second,
I had trouble to switch weapons too, I couldn't switch again when I pressed A then Z.
The game is ambitious, I guess you worked hard but didn't managed to finish all you wanted in time,
Continue improving yourself ! ?
Keep creating games !
Well.. it was kinda not playable..
there are two serious bugs and the other aren't too bad but we'll get to that.
First of all the resolution - it seems you checked it only on your resolution cause in mine things get fucked up.
I started off-screen and things were scaled pretty badly.
the second major problem was that I couldn't switch between the bow and axe (or whatever it was)
without getting unarmed which was pretty wierd.
The animation was buggy as well and the shootings as well. (delay, not shooting at all etc)
Then there were enemies with their head not being rendered and all sorts of stuff...
I think perhaps you've got a messy code and that's what made it to that point. My advice - try and keep your code clean and modular. If you'll never cut edges you'll never get situations like this.
Still accept what I say because I believe if you'll know your tools better you could also save yourselves the struggles I'm sure you've had.
Good luck, still pretty good job!
The graphics were not particularly pretty, but I tend to forgive that because graphics are not really the most important part of a game, to me, and I can still enjoy a game even if it has less-than-optimal graphics - so I'm not going to let the graphics factor into my overall review of the game. Certainly they could be improved, and I encourage you to improve them if you can - but they are perfectly acceptable for a Ludum Dare game.
The main problem I have is with the gameplay. I absolutely could not get past the first minute or so without getting stuck or dying, and that is due to a few things:
- The controls were rather difficult to remember, so I simply had to restart so I could look at the controls. This problem would be solved with simpler controls and a help menu so that controls did not have to be memorized.
- It did not seem that attacking worked particularly well. I could not attack the first enemy with the melee weapon, and so I was killed.
- The game seems rather glitchy - once I finally got past the first enemy, I fell and didn't die but couldn't see my character. At this point, I quit, because I didn't feel like restarting the same game yet again.
Basically, the overall problem is that, due to the accumulation of all these small problems, the game forces the user to basically restart whenever something new is introduced. This is terribly discouraging to gameplay and makes the game incredibly frustrating for the player.
For future games, my main recommendation is to focus on making sure the gameplay is good. This can be very difficult - but just try, and also remember to implement features that prevent the game from being destroyed by something so simple as not knowing the controls.
