One Screen Racer by disease

[raw]
made by disease for LD31 (COMPO)
Presenting the LD31 entry that will take you the least amount of time to play! And it's HTML5 only, so playing it is really easy as well!

One Screen Racer is an overhead time trial racer in the spirit of Super Sprint. Can you win the gold trophy?

I wrote the physics from scratch, which was probably a mistake, but it was an interesting project. I spent a lot of time making a game that would allow additional track creation easy - but ended up not having enough time to create any additional tracks. A lot of recorded sound and music is missing as well. Watch out for the post-competition version though!

The drifting feels really good. Too bad there aren't more tracks!

I agree, driving feels very satisfying. Gold Cup is a little easy, I got it after my third try. My best run is 36 seconds left. Nice game!

Oh and I miss a button for restart and with the current physics and max speed you dont really need the brake.

Driving feels very nice. It needs some opponents. Also some engine noise and squealing tires would have added a lot.

Also like drifting. Consider multiplayer by sharing keyboard, might be funny!

The physics are great! I hope you add arrow key controls to the post-competition version, it's a little difficult with a non-QWERTY keyboard.

Good point, I did not consider non-qwerty. I will definitely add arrow key support to the post-comp version.

This brings memories when I was child, and played similar games. Nice work, if you could add more tracks it would be great!

Hi there. Nice skidding for corners. Penalty on grass feels a bit harsh. Shame no engine sounds. Good job!

Is the deobfuscated/unminified source available?
If not, could you write a bit about the physics and the resources you've used?

Yes, the source is all on my github under the OverheadRacer.gmx file. You don't need GameMaker to read it but it will help. I'm pretty sure the free version should compile and run this game fine and make it easy to view all the objects.

Just FYI I will make a blog post in the future addressing the physics, which are really simple but also quite flexible.

Ah, my bad! I was looking at the OverheadRacer.js file.
Thanks! Promising demo, I'm looking forward to your post-compo version

Hah feels good man only I think a wipeout style art would have felt better with the way the drifting works.

nice driving mechanics, good job! :) it's a shame that the game itself seems to be somewhat unfinished for now. also, i'd appreciate if it was possible to move reverse when needed.

This is agate that can really be expanded upon! As a fan of racing games, I loved it, the drifting physics are so much fun. You calibrated the driving controls real well!

I will say, tone down the grass slow down though, make it still slow down, but not so sudden.

The drifting physics is funny. Nice effort from you to make it from scratch.

Driving feels really good. It needed more tracks or an online leaderboard, or just something to spice it up a bit. And an engine sound.

Nice controls, hard to get a hang of at first, but I felt like I was getting better at it as I played more and more (: Nice job!
