Farm Invaders! by Reyn

[raw]
made by Reyn for LD31 (JAM)
Stop bandits from stealing your resources and buy yourself out of servitude!

Arrows or WASD to move. Press space to preform an action.

Fishing and farming will generate resources. When a trader picks up a resource he will pay you one coin.

Bandits will try and steal your resources. When a trader runs off screen with a resource you die.

You can battle bandits by running into them. You will not lose health if you reach a bandit before he picks up a resource. However if you battle a bandit after he picks up a resource you will lose health.

You can regain health by sleeping.

Nice jam entry and a nice take on both the "tower defense" and "resources collection" genres. Probably a bit easy, but given its short length it doesn't really matter.

I'm unsure about the "sleep" meter, probably it makes you produce\move faster but I couldn't tell easily. If so, I think that it should tweaked and be a more important mechanic to reach the endgame.

Overall a good job, indeed! :D

@LostTrainDude Thanks!
Sleeping restores health. Health is only lost if you fight a bandit that grabbed a resource. So there are two ways you can die. One is having a resource stolen from you and the other is to lose all your health. I realize its not intuitive, will concentrate more on art next time. (My artist dropped me on this one). Yes its way too easy. I should have spent time balancing things out, maybe later.

Very minimalistic, look very nice
Kind of short, but the concept itself is good

Fun simple game. I didn't get it the 1st time but the 2nd time it was clear what I had to do. I could tell who robbers were by the color of their skin... cough.

I kid.

That was a surprisingly gripping game. I like the minimalist graphical style. I'd have liked some clearer instructions, though - I died one of each type of death before working out what the purple cubes were. Unless that's deliberate, and you're meant to work things out for yourself? Either way, good game!

Really nice game... I died though, not knowing that you actually could :( please tell me that in the description. It is a bit easy

I really like the gamdesign. And this vanishing roof... I love it I dont know why.
I had no problem with the gfx they are totally efficient but the game was too easy I wish they were more unexpected events coming ( crows in fish ? etc ). A fun thing would be to cut outside view when you are in the house so you would spend time to check outside instead of sleeping & watching.

I had problem to get the health + the fact that I can farm. The hint are not enough you should add some "click to famr" text.
You should also edit a more complete game description on the LD page

I found the message at the end witty and the game was totally worth my time spent.

Thanks !

@vortex @PTSnoop @Benjamin @AntonyBaasan
Thanks I updated the description to explain the game.

@Jonapulse I wanted to make the game monochrome but was afraid of exactly that :P

@nbilyk Thanks =P

Nice game, dude! I don't like it when i try to kill a red guy but i actually start farming and he escapes. I think that's part of the difficulty, though

I can't help but think that this farmer kills those thieves in the most brutal way possible... Not good for business!

I actually do like how you had a clear end goal for the player too. It actually did keep my playing until the very end.

VERY smartly designed, very deceptively simple, but intricately locking design decisions really add up to a great, albeit small, game.

A successful theft was the biggest surprise for me. I was weighing things up by efficiency and decided to just let it happen, but DAMN NO GAHDAMN NO.

Do you play any euro boardgames like Agricola? The combination of efficiency management and coloured cubes made me think of them :P

As a bonus it even seemed like you have a message about farm murders.

GREAT JOB

@Tuism Funny that you should mention board games. I recently bought and played: ticket to ride, catan and eldritch horror (Stocking up for holidays), and yes because of that my game has a board game feel. Board games were the first thing that came to mind when I read "everything on one screen".

The message about farm murders was a happy coincidence, something that I'm thinking about taking further. I for some reason want to make a game with social commentary in it (It is a very unexplored media in South Africa).

Thanks :)
