Ancient Portal by Nnnnneeeedddd
README PLEASE-----------------------------
Theme:
The game displays the theme in two ways. The first, is the retro style of the game (like it would have run on "ancient technology"), you will notice the games very low resolution (160x120). The second, is the crossbow, and the portal, the story behind the game: You are a man who is destined to protect the portal for his life, because "ancient technology"(the brown boxes around the portal) are used to stop the demons coming through, however they are faulty, which is why you have to be there, to stop the "few" monsters that come through from becoming a lot! Your crossbow is ancient, and made to kill these particular monsters.
How to Play----------------
Controls:
WASD to move, mouse to look, space to jump, mouse button 1 to fire bolt.
Escape to pause (there is a pause menu of sorts).
Strafe jumping:
back when I didn't know what the game was going to be, I implemented strafe jumping, turns out it works quite well. First of all, just jumping makes you go faster, if you hold down space while moving, you will move faster.
however what makes you go really fast is holding down "space", "w" and one of the strafe keys ("a" or "d"). If you hold these down, you will actually ACCELERATE (watch the speed meter), this is key, in avoiding all the monsters, it works very good for quick getaways, and makes you move more (in order to avoid the holes in the floor). The speed increment slows down after around 70, however, it still increases, technically you can get infinite speed!!
THE TUTORIAL IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE EASY: The tutorial is a strafe jumping tutorial, it is not supposed to be easy, if you cannot do it, then just go back to the menu (via escape) and click on PlayWithNoTutorial. The strafe jumping tutorial is in order for you to improve, so you can get a higher score.
The portal WARNING--------
As soon as you collide with the portal, a message comes up.
When this message comes up, the enemies have STARTED SPAWNING!
Final Words--------
Thank you for playing, and reading this description.
I hope you enjoy, and it would mean a LOT if you could post your scores down in the chat, as I find it very interesting :).
Thanks again,
Ned
EDIT------
I just found out, if you shoot an arrow, and jump at the same time, you get a boost. I didn't actually know this, but it's awesome :D :D

I love the jumping.
I love that you can jump on the arrows.
I love the retro style.
but i hate how horrible i am at this game...
Here's what I thought:
-The mouse sensitivity is WAY too high, or at least for me. Maybe include a slider/input field to set it.
-Physics seem too, um, "stop-y"? When you let go of jump, you just fall straight down. Would be nice to keep gliding for a bit into the direction you were going.
-Mild inconveniences. For one, having to hit M->Enter/DownArrow->Enter is annoying when you die when taking the tutorial, there should be a single button to completely restart it. When you also start the game, if you literally walk forward 1ft you drop into lava and die. Annoying because I can't see down when I just spawn, and I don't expect to be dropped into a pit of lava when I begin.
There's also a bug I found, infinite mouse look. I'm sure you know about this, but I'd just like to point it out.
Overall, not bad and certainly better than some of the submissions I've played so far, but some overall polish would've been nice (if of course you had the time, otherwise I fully understand).
That being said, the game has a really nice look to it.
Super solid entry!
Ahah, love the grahpics and tips in the gameplay ;)
