iJ by Sakuyan

[raw]
made by Sakuyan for LD31 (COMPO)
iJ is an unfinished demo but I am quite happy to try something new this LD compo (something other than a pixel platformer)

The entire duration of the compo was a disaster but I hope you enjoy the little demo. Thanks/

First off, I really like your art style, so good job on that. I'm sure creating those assets took a large chunk of your time, but here's a few things I think could have made the game feel a bit more fun to play:

- UI responsiveness. In other words, things to give the player more feedback on where their mouse is/is clicking. The buttons to select attacks should have altered graphics when hovered/pressed. The enemy tiles under the mouse cursor should highlight when they are a valid target.

- Sound effects. I know you opted out of Audio for judging, so you probably just didn't have time to get to this. However, I feel even some quickly generated sounds from something like sfxr would have helped you in the "game feedback" department.

In closing, I say keep working on it if you're still interested. I like turn based rpgs, and I think your art style alone makes it something I would buy.

Nice game, I dont think it is so unfinished, but it would be much better with traditional jrpg music and sounds :). Check my game too: Presidents bodyguard simulator.

Very nice graphics :). It's a pretty simple demo, but I'd be interested to see it developed further.

Given the amount of functionality that's present, I think the interface is what's most in need of attention: it's not quite obvious what all the buttons do, and once or twice I thought a character would have a double-turn because I got confused about the difference between the portrait and the turn indicator.

Come to think of it, I also have some SRPG code that is badly in need of art. I, uh... may have to send you an email...

Hi there. Love your art style and the presentation. Real shame you didn't make the game itself yet. Excellent so far!

The art is pretty nice. The characters anyway.

UI felt sluggish and unresponsive. No indication that I had clicked on, or hovered over anything.

Sounds would have been really great.

I found the game blocked, it's actually the turn of nobody.
Nice graphics. The gameplay is somehow... basic.
The characters are cute. even slimes are nice !

That is entire game on one screen though. I like the character art a lot!

A minor bug... I killed a dude who was up to attack next, and then it froze *forever*.... The character design for this is great, and I love the Fire Emblem-style attack animations. Given that it's, as you've said, unfinished, I think the only meaningful change you could make is to have the characters slide in slightly faster when the attack animations are starting.

I hope you keep going and keep adding some more juice! What you have so far is really cute. Thanks for the demo!
