Skyku by kabutakogames

Bad situation,
Try to make the best of it,
Fight with haiku.

Construct a sentence,
And then another two more,
Use five, seven, five.

But not always though,
Sometimes you just have small words,
Do your best anyway.

Within the compo rules,
But made by two of us both,
Here's a game we made.

There might be mistakes,
But my eyeballs are dead,
I hope these links work.

----

Controls:
W,A,S,D - Move
E - Change destination
Space - Toggle the store

----

Check out the store to get new phrases, they refresh every time.

Each planet should have one challenge for you, just follow your compass!

I've made an update build that deals with many issues we weren't able to get around to, or that people talked about in the comments! We are looking to post some more updates to this, so keep an eye out ;)

Tweet your favourite haiku's to us @kabutakogames !

----

Note: For best results, play in 16:9 x720 - the text scales weirdly, and its better looking the higher that you go.

Edits: I've changed the upload because there were gui scaling issues (still are a little bit) and bugs with the store.

The game feels pretty surreal, in the best possible way. You've mastered the theme.

This was really cool, I ended up playing for a lot longer than I originally expected. The upgrades didn't seem to do anything unless I'm missing something, and the planets were kinda easy to pass up but that wasn't a huge deal. I'd love to see more of this, it was really easy to get into but also very addictive, great work!

I appreciated the effectiveness of marmots and Spanish rain in this

Nice idea! Too bad I don't really know english syllable rules, so it was kinda difficult for me :D

For the people experiencing UI problems, use a 16:9 or a 16:10 resolution! If you run with 4:3, then stuff is going to be out of screen (and game will become really hard :D )

The idea is great - I'd have liked to be able to use some of the smaller pieces together to fit the 5/7/5 rule, as it was I mostly used marmots rather than most of the ones in the store.

I think I defeated all of the planets. Nice little concept, one of the most original interpretations of the theme I've seen so far!

I'm on a train back home from a Real World Gathering, with silly internet, so I can't download the game.

But the screenshots look awesome!

Sorry, didn't get it. How do I fight? Pick random sentences? It took a long time for me to understand that I use w,a,s,d to move.

I feel like this would've done better as a RPG rather than a space shooter, but I love the Haiku mechanic. Great Job

It's a great idea but I don't this this game is really for me, although it could be mostly because I'm not a native English speaker so counting out the syllables can be a chore.

Nevertheless, the presentation of the game is very well put together with a suitably space-y soundtrack :)

What did I just play? hahaha, great work. I don't usually get dizzy with games but it was a bit hard to turn the ship without getting a little bit.

Cool idea and I also got a general grasp of the syllables used in English thanks to this. I think I managed to clear all of the planets, some of them with perfect haikus even!

Comment in haiku:
the game was interesting,
thanks for making it.

hehe, clever. mouse-lock for windowed mode would be nice. :-) felt like fighting weeping angels from dr. who. nice work!

This is really innovative and the execution on the theme was perfect! I love me some puns and Skyku is great! I did have a lot of trouble battling though, I got close to winning once but the enemies are way better than me at this haha! I like the combination of genres and the planets in the background added a good amount of atmosphere. Great job!

Hi, I'm on Linux and there doesn't seem to be a way to change the resolution. Or anything in the game world I can interact with besides the shop.

This is interesting in a way, and haikus for sure are an unconventional weapon.
The game is more fun than it should be. All you can do is fly around in a sort of overworld space mode, and fight on different planets. The fight itself is not really a challenge. I wonder why there are no 5 syllable phrases though - I was hoping to make a perfect Haiku, but the game won't let me. Not even the shop has them, and why would I buy a one syllable phrase for $100?
It also took me a while to find out that I have to click on my ship to submit the haiku. I guess the game could do that automatically, as there is nothing meaningful I can do after all 3 lines are filled.

Huh. Haiku is certainly an unconventional weapon! I really appreciate games that work the menu/ui into the level design. Really nice work!

I feel a kinship.

I don't know why, but "shall we eat all the" never counted as being five syllables even though it is? Also I had a very hard time telling who was winning until I actually won.

Beautiful art, had a good time streaming it. I missed that you could buy more words in the shop and gave up on it too early so I won't count that against you. A really cool idea though.

Nice game. I like the description you put :)

I felt a huge lack of feedback though. I had no idea when I was getting hurt or doing damage. It took me way too long to understand it.

Hey, thanks for trying to play my game! I have a primitive events system working now that spams my computer with noise whenever a connection occurs, so if you want to try and play then give me a time and I'll try and have myself or someone I know looking out for it!

Thanks again! :)

Fantastic use of the theme, pretty fun to beat your enemies with malformed haikus at the start! Graphics were nice too, my only real issue was that "Reroll" costing health wasn't really explained. Good work, keep it up! :)

At the beginning I didn't get how to fight, so I think the rules should be explained more precisely. Beside this game is really fun. I also like the graphics. For me it's strong 4/5.

To add to the fun

I think some of your syllable counts were off... just sayin :)
