Hit Troll With Axe by Yaguar

[raw]
made by Yaguar for LD36 (COMPO)
Hit Troll With Axe is a text based adventure where you take on a journey to save a princess!

You can type "help" get a list of commands.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Original plan: Run a C game with a DX11 basic render engine and plug in Nuklear for UI support.

4 hours in, decided this was a terrible idea and moved over to Unity.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Known Issues: Game crashes 2nd time around. Restarting the game between plays fixes this.

Short but cute! Feels very soothing, especially the music. The art looks great for a text adventure as well!
That has to be the most overkill use of Unity ever, though :P

Short game, but it's beautiful and I really like the music.
I never play text-based game before. This is the first time I play this kind of game and I really like it.
Great job.

Pretty decent text adventure.

However, you're supposed to make the assets for a compo entry yourself.

Nevermind, I guess it's a jam entry, even though it says compo..?

I like the old text adventure type. But I never get stuck on it :D Great job, but sadly not my favorite type.

Altrough the best way how to express ancient technology. I played this type of game a lot of years ago. And this was a nice reminder thank you for that.

Had fun playing! Nice fun narrative, a little thin though.

Good work!

I love the title, but are you sure you just want to "hit" a troll? IIRC, just hitting would annoy the troll and correct command was "kill" :D

I know it's not easy writing a parser in unity (I don't know it tbh, but I guess), but I think n s e w commands were supported in adventure-like games even before full commands were added.

Also wow, music used in kerbal :)

...and I"m stuck at cats. It'd be good to LOOK and be able to re-read the description.

There is a typo on the second screen, 'brough' instead of 'brought'. Check for those when creating a text adventure.

The interface has the usual problems of a text adventure, e.g. it says 'There is an axe. Maybe you should TAKE it...' so I 'take it' and it gives me the classic 'There isn't a it here.'.

Using the UP key, like in a console, to get the last text back would have been nice. How often do I have to type 'hit troll with axe' and then again when I make a typo?

I stopped the game when I arrived at the cats. I noticed that you cannot write 'check cat' or 'search cats' and hit ENTER which I guess is intended but then I did not know what to do because when I arrived at the cats I typed help before reading what it said about the cats. I then could not get back the origin cat text which would have probably made the situation clearer. Going south and north again did not dislpay the text again.

After writing the above I have now restarted the game, gone back to the cats and found that the text does not clear up anything. I seem to have a rope, then I cannot check it or use it with the cats. There are major usability issues here.

Still, the music is very nice and I like the pixely graphics.

I got lost, game wouldn't let me use the rope on myself, the field to the north seemed rather pointless, I like the idea though, fits well with he theme!
