The B Team by KhaoTom

[raw]
made by KhaoTom for LD32 (JAM)
A JRPG Battler in which the usual attack type tropes are less useful than the unconventional attack types.

_ Basic Controls _
left-right on arrows (A,D) or analog left stick to select character.
up-down on arrows (W,S) or analog left stick to select action.
Enter, Fire1 (left click, gamepad A button) to confirm action.
Backspace, Fire 2 (right click, gamepad B button) to close sub-windows.

_ Classes _
Fighter - his sword arm is broken and causes 1 damage. Maybe enough to knock some sense into a hysterical person, but we aren't fighting our way out this one. His shield is really useful however. Use it to block all incoming damage and potentially knock an opponent off balance. He can Talk:Taunt to send enemies into a careless frenzy.

Cleric - she's fallen from grace, and her healing spells are very fickle. She can pray for help, sometimes that helps against enemies that the divine particularly hates. She can detect if an item is cursed. She can Talk:Chastise to force an enemy to confront their sins.

Rogue - her dagger has been cursed, and will heal enemies (living ones anyway..). She can Steal items, many of which are useful. she can Talk:Distract to attempt to throw enemies off balance.

Wizard - he's completely out of mana, so he'll have to channel the party's HP instead. His Scan ability is free though. He can read obscure languages. He can Talk:Reason to try to find a peaceful resolution.

* Even the gimpy main attacks have their time and place.
* Talking to your enemy during battle can be useful!
* If you get stuck, try fleeing the battle.
* It is possible to make it to the final boss without getting hurt once.

Make sure to read the README.TXT for additional info and controls!

If you are really having problems, peep the SPOILERS.TXT for a WALKTHROUGH.

I love the name & characters abilities, and that the butlers weapon is his polite mannerism.

The gameplay is a bit confusing maybe a tutorial would help!
But the graphics are nice (however animations are missing).

This is an interesting puzzle dressed up as an RPG. It got fairly difficult, but it was interesting that you could brute-force your way through some challenges.
The interface on the screen gets hopelessly mashed together at low resolutions. The controls were also a bit confusing.

Yeah, this was my first attempt at using Unity's new UI system. It's got a lot of nice features, but scaling is not one of them. Next time, Gadget! Next time!

Well the mood is here but kinda tricky to get into it like that, I would liked to have a little intro (even white text on black background to introduce it ^^) anyway well done!

I really really like the way you turned the menu/battle system on its head. It's a really neat experience digging through all the menus and trying to figure out the right strategy. Really creative! Can't say I got very far though, haha, but definitely love the idea.

One can see that you have quite a lively fantasy :D.

Good job with this game. Your art style is really cool and the gameplay is intuitive. Thank you for that game!

You don't see much JRPG style games in Ludum Dare but I liked this rather fun twist on the genre (even though the game itself is more of a point and click puzzler than an actual rpg) plus I loved the subtle humour you've added in.

Pro tip: Play this with the FF7 battle theme as a soundtrack!

There is NO WAY I could have figured out the solutions on my own, so thank you very much for the SPOILERS.TXT. Loved the premise - if the puzzles were more intuitive (and obviously if there were more of them), I would buy a game like this!

Great job guys! I dig the art and the puzzles are tough! Controls are a little twitchy on controller, hard to swap menus. Overall a lot of fun! :)

I really like the graphic style of this game!
The gameplay is a little bit boring after a while.. there are not so many animation so the game seems slow and still.
Btw I like it, well done! :D

Game setting has great potential. It's in an early stage, but it definitely could be something in the future.
