Depressopia by ZYXer

[raw]
made by ZYXer for LD32 (JAM)
You are the commander of the airship of Depressopia, the town of eternal sadness. Fly around and spread sadness to the neighboring cities. Design your own airship from individual parts!

IMPORTANT:
The embeded version above is the post jam version. It only has minor changes compared to the jam version (see list below). I urge you to play the post jam version at least once, otherwise the construction screen will probably be too confusing for you.

NOTE:
I had originally planned to let the player collect/unlock the airship parts over the course of the game. However, I ran out of time, so currently you get all parts from the start. That's why it's become more of a sandbox game.

I hope you nevertheless have fun playing it! :D

POST JAM CHANGES:

I've realized that many people found the airship construction screen confusing, so I made following changes:
- Added short two-sentence tutorial
- More information in tooltips
- You can see which tiles are blocked
- You can see the limits of the area you can place blocks on

The jam version is too easy, so in the post jam version cannons in later cities deal more happiness and have a larger range.

BEST AIRSHIP SO FAR: - Thanks Mikomic! xD

As a side note, if you get too much height, the torrets won't shoot at you.

Some more weeks of work and polish will surely make this game a little fun gem.
The costruction screen and mechanics is well done, i loved making my "Flying Warship of SaDistruction D:"

Your first ship doesn't have enough upward acceleration. You can take a propeller, rotate it by pressing the R key and place it looking upwards.

The graphics are really nice, I like the look of it. Unfortunately I didn't see enough of the game, yet, as my ship didn't shoot when I clicked, so I never got beyond the first level.

I love upgrading my airship! I wish there was a little more depth, but this is to be expected from an LD game. Nice job!

Hi, do you have a non post jam version that I can test for the voting?

I loved this game so, so much. The steadily greyed out world is a wonderful reversal of that "ADD COLOR TO THE WORLD!!!" trope as well as a easy visual indication of how far you've progressed; the airship construction was super fun; all things considered, this was a wonderful game.

Very cool concept. Would have loved converted turret to fight for you, and possibly basic ennemy happiness aircrafts attacking you.

Neat concept :) You also have a lot of very advanced mechanics in the game that make it quite interesting. I think the gameplay however isn't quite as fun as it could be with all the possibilities available.

Also would've loved some audio :)

A lot more fun than I expected, congrats! Has a Besiege and FTL feel to it. I kept retrying after failure even though I knew it was going to be repetitive, just to try a new kind of ship configuration. You may have found one of the secret ingredients of fun :)

A very fun, enjoyable experience. I loved the concept. I'm very impressed at all you did in such a short amount of time, definitely way more than I could do. Good job!

Awesome game! Upgrading the ship was so much fun. (This was my final result: http://i.imgur.com/REAQirG.png)

Otherwise, though, the gameplay felt a little lacking. The cities weren't really too difficult, and it was tedious to go all the way back across the map to upgrade and restore life.

Also, at times, it felt sort of arbitrary what parts I could place where. I think I mostly figured it out when I made my ultimate sad machine, but it was annoying at first.

Let's see, what else... the theme of using sadness as a weapon was definitely shown in the visuals, but it didn't really fit into the gameplay. The shooter could've been about anything, really.

I can nitpick some more, but at the end of the day, the ship-building was awesome. Good job.
