Bottle Toss by RedSorrel

[raw]
made by RedSorrel for LD32 (JAM)
Not my first jam, but my first submission!
Made in GameMaker Studio

Controls:
Left and Right arrows to move
Space to jump
Z to throw bottles

Goal: hit each of the sea creatures with the bottle to score points

Other tools:
Manga Studio 5: making sprites and background
Game Maker sprite editor: to fine tune some of the sprites
Bfxr: sound effects
PtCollage: Background music ( I created this for another jam, that's why I'm opting out on scoring for sound but critique welcomed!)
Audacity: Pitch the background music down for the end theme.

Killing sea creatures with plastic bottles... I'm not sure if this game is a statement against littering, or a parody of one.

I like the idea of bottles and the graphics are well made. However aming is very unpredictable and once I killed all the enemies there was nothing else to do. Nice submission.

Here is my assessment of your game. Top down.
Innovation: Not much. The gravity could have been tuned up a bit I felt. The jumping was slow, while I get that it's underwater it tones down the fun factor. Also the bottles are hard to aim.
Fun: Refer to innovation on this one. Little slow, but I enjoyed the atmosphere.
Theme:I felt like it fit the theme. The bottle picking up mechanic was cool.
Graphics: Pretty good, I don't know what that first creature was, but I liked the crab and the seaweed and stuff.
Humor: None that I can find.
Mood: Good, but the audio got repetitive breaking the immersion.

Congratulations on finishing your first entry! Your game had a sweet methodical mood, though you need to work on adding more content.

Nice concept, I like the hard aim that is given in the game. It can be a really nice working ground for some intense gameplay with a more mobile character !

Great Idea. Cool way to advocate on littering!

Cute idea. Kind of funny the comment it's making about the damage plastic bottles do to the environment while being the protagonist using them to its advantage. I liked the aesthetic :)

Short but fun! Some way to aim and visualize the arc of the throws would have been nice. Pretty good concept too!

Ha, throwing bottles was fun, although it was so short by the time I got the hang of it the game was over!

Congrats on your first submission!

This is a pretty solid level. The bottle ammo reuse is a nice feature. Given that everything in the game is pretty slow moving, it could be difficult to aim well.

This is a pretty solid first level that introduces a few creature types. There's plenty of vertical real estate if you wanted to add reefs to climb or something.

The audio did the job. The music loop was pretty short and a little obtrusive.

Hope you had fun. Keep it up!

I liked the controls a lot, I think they'd be a good basis for a longer game. Playwise only thing that bothered me was a lack of direction indicator for the player, which resulted in me throwing bottles in the wrong directions.

Graphics and sound are also nice, so even though the game is very short, there is nothing wrong with the fundamentals here :)
