A Trainer's Progress

An idler in the style of Progress Quest or Godville, set in the "monster trainer" genre.

Give your trainer a name, and watch them struggle to become a Master Trainer!

Doesn't require a very wide window (should even be fine on mobile), but for best experience a tall one is recommended.

Pretty neat! It needs a progress bar like progress quest; it's a little hard to know how far along I am.

Alas, I had some issues with the framework properly updating progress bars, so I had to cut them.

This is great! In fact, I'm still playing, even as I'm typing this! I'm harnessing my unconventional weapon or apathy!

I'll play until I pass my gym test (or until I get a badge)!

I like this, very funny.

I quite liked the funny journal entries and imaginative monster names - but I thought the game didn't leave the player much to do.

I like the bad puns-- Caracalbatross is my favorite.

Sort of wish you had more choice here, but it's a pretty nice mons parody.

I'm sorry, this was so dull. I get that it's an idle game, but that's no excuse to give the player NOTHING to do. Have you ever played Cookie Clicker? It's an idle game done right. You click a cookie to earn points and buy things that click the cookie for you or produce points by themselves. It's easy to get to a point where you can leave the game on overnight and end up with tons more points, but if you want something to do, you can still manage your little cookie empire.

Here, there's nothing. Give me SOME control over the game. Something to click to train my Animon, or the ability to change around my team, or - the big one - the ability to control the battles myself.

At the very least, add something nice to look at. Having pictures of the Animon would have let me get a little invested in the status of my team. Or some battle animation. Something besides text.

I'm also a little annoyed that it didn't fit the theme of the Jam, and how much of it was ripped straight out of Pokemon. Had you've made them, say, cutlery-mons or origami-mons, you would've actually had unconventional weapons. Battling monsters really isn't that unconventional.

My trainer seems to be a bit determined to trade away the best pokemon in the time from time to time so that makes things slower than they need to be.

Really liked all the pokemon references. Just got my first badge and apparently sobbed uncontrollably for a few hours after that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really liked the monster names, and some of the stuff that popped up in the journal were great.

It's pretty funny seeing a progress quest style game as an LD entry, but like others have said, it would be nice to have some control over what was happening even if it was in a comically superficial way.

There are some great little text bits in here. "Why does everything I love die?"

I think I just won this game.
