Shop 'Til You Drop by hissssssssss

5/11/15 - POST-COMPO VERSION UP!

For anyone interested in playing Shop 'Til You Drop, I highly recommend playing the post-compo version, even if that means you don't rate the game. It doesn't just fix movement and sound bugs, but also boasts twice as many weapons as the original version!

Changes include:
-30+ new weapons, including Baguette, Dictionary, Lamb Kebabs, Umbrella, and more!
-Fixed the sound bug and improved sound quality.
-Fixed movement bugs and knockback.
-Added new animations.
-Icons now tell you what each weapon does.
-Time between waves was greatly reduced, and enemy balance improved.
-The game over screen is no longer weirdly specific. ("You lasted 58.392 seconds!")

******************

Zombies are flooding the town, and you're left without a weapon! You head to the Miracle-Vend to materialize a shotgun or something, but it appears the machine is malfunctioning...

4/20/15 - Fixed a bug that caused erratic character movement speed.

CONTROLS:
Arrow Keys - Movement, Select Vend Option
X - Confirm, Examine
Z - Cancel, Use Equipped "Weapon"
A,S - Switch Equipped "Weapon"

TIPS FOR PROS: The better the vend button you push, the higher chance you have of snagging something rare, but the longer you stand vulnerable.

------------------------------------
Made with Python 2.7 and pygame. pygame ate all my SFX so no sound for you. ;_;

Not much else to say except that dropping your own weapons into the game is really easy!
For the curious:
-Open up weapon_data.csv
-Copy the top sample row to the bottom and give it a unique id
-Fill in the appropriate values. Make sure the image names are correct or the sprite will default to a coffee cup!
-Put your weapon's image and icon (32x32) into the images folder.
-You're done!
Want to add a cheeseburger? Soccer ball? Your childhood stuffed toy? Rubber ducks? Balloon swords? The only limit is your imagination!

Put a weapon in the game? Toss a screenshot for us down below or tweet me @ushirobito

All of the different items and their uses really add to the game, and I had a fun time playing it as the game has a good challenge mixed with a fun element (shopping).

I imagine throwing floppy disks at zombified people would be extremely productive. :D

I think the coolest thing you've got here is the easy modding/inserting of your own weapons! I haven't seen that in any other games so far.

Besides that I think it's let down by some weird control quirks - maybe my PC is messed up but I moved way too fast to feel accurate in navigating around the zombies or aiming at them with weapons. I also sometimes got stuck in the vending machine (which is how I eventually died).

But it kept me entertained for a bit!

I like that you have to catch the mug when you throw it, very innovative!

I mean, it's not an everyday thing that you can hit a zombie with a caffelatte.
Character moved way too fast tho.

@qapn, SkyWolf: The speed thing seems to be a weird hiccup in how my low-spec development PC processes things. It runs at a completely reasonable speed on my (terrible) computer!

There might be a parameter I can change to fix it. I'll see what I can do.

Funny! I don't get the shopping completely, I just mash x at the shop. Graphics are neat. Humorous items. I don't have much to say about it. I like it!
Also: your game works faster/slower on monitors with different refresh rates.

@joppiesaus: You are correct about the refresh rate thing. Turns out there was a pretty unfortunate typo in the player character's update cycle. That's fixed now! Thanks for playing.

Great game! The lack of sound effects really kills the mood a bit >.< There could be more enemies though... I got to a point where nothing else came at me...
Also I got really easily both Excalibur and Masamune! Don't know if I'm really lucky or if the drop rate is high xp

@nihilaleph:
The RNG must love you. No one who tested eveer mentioned getting either of those, and what's more, *I've* never gotten either, and I've pushed the vend buttons too many times to count. The drop rates on ultra-rares is between 0.2% and 5%, and then the pool of ulra-rares has a number of items, so your chances of getting either is quite low. Both? Extremely unlikely.

If no enemies were showing up, it just means you hit a long period between waves. After beating the boss, the enemies should spawn infinitely at an ever-increasing rate. I had to give players gaps between waves to have a chance to vend powerful items and replenish themselves, but if you had both Excalibur and Masamune, you probably would have never needed to and had nothing to do! XD

Really neat idea, making time the currency for the vending machine. Since the enemies never stop, it's a good choice. The giant zombie was funny.

The vending machine mechanic is well thought out. Cool take on the theme

This is pretty fun :D I love the idea and the number of things that can be thrown at enemies.

Holyshet, Masamune and Excalibur?! D: I never got any of thoseeee

I find this game interesting for its satire element. It's like a paradox, at least in the case of the consumer goods materializing, where the stuff turning us into the walking dead is being used in brutality to fend off the monsters it is creating.

An interesting idea; But I feel there should be some sort of way to tell what he weapon does; As I got up close to use a projectile at one stage.

The controls are a bit confusing at first (who uses z/x?). With more items and the ability to earn/spend money it would be a nice survival minigame.

Fun game just wish the zombies attacking were a little bit faster to put more pressure on the player to speed up. Liked the amount of weapons you got in though and nice feature that you can modify and add your own ones.

Very nice and funny game! Using all those weapon and trying to keep the better ones and spend as fast as possible the worst ones was very fun!
The hitbox and ai could be better, but with that many weapons (an bandages, though they seem rare), it's perfect the way it is!
Great job!
