PHARBA by Awpteamoose

[raw]
made by Awpteamoose for LD32 (JAM)
A game, where your only weapon is a paint bucket.
It's a local versus game that supports 2-4 players.

Every player controls an invisible man, who carries a paint bucket.
Your goal is to paint your opponents before they do the same to you :)

You can choose out of 9 levels for now.

Let the splat madness begin!
Make colors, not war!

CONTROLS:

Esc - go back.
Enter - start game.

Player 1:
WSAD - movement
U - splat red
I - splat green
O - splat blue

Player 2:
Arrows - movement
7 - splat red
8 - splat green
9 - splat blue

You can, of course, use generic gamepads:
Left stick - movement
B - splat red
A - splat green
X - splat blue

Press multiple keys at once to mix colors.
Different colors have their own cooldowns.

Interesting concept, not sure why each player has 3 colors to splat with but the end result looks like modern art :D

Would be nice if you could actually emulate paint physics, but it is a 2D game.

I like how different it is from all the other submissions. I could really see this game having a strong, pleasant effect on small children.

Very nice, I just watched the video but it looks and sounds great. I like the color choices and art style a lot. The music wasn't my cup of tea but did fit the mood nicely. Paint sounds were great. Overall a fun concept, well done!

I'm sorry, I can't play this, Linux and Web only.

This reminds me of that game that came out not too long ago called Screencheat. I don't have much to complain about here other than that there isn't a singleplayer with AI.

Really well done.

I didn't play the game, but this is awesome! Very clever and colorful. Work on the sound because they might get annoying overtime. Great entry! I had fun. :)

Another game with colors as a weapon, just like mine. Although with a lot more action. :)

Being a Grumpy McNofriends I couldn't really experience this game to its fullest extent, but its a really interesting idea. Nice art direction too.

Too bad I didn't have anybody to play with. I thought the game was bugged for a moment, but then I realized that there were invisible walls :P.

Interesting idea and it looks and feels pretty nice too.

I initially found it confusing regarding which person I was. I think this was because there wasn't any feedback from paint cooldown and both players have the same colors. Maybe that was the point? It would atleast be nice if players had different footstep sounds so you know who is walking when. The paint effects and footsteps are really cool, though, especially how your footsteps slowly fade.

Really interesting concept, but overall it felt like it wasn't a fun game in the end because of a few design choices:

There's not really a reason to having three different colours, they all do the same thing, the "different cooldown" thing doesn't make a jot of real difference, and, while it made cool colour combos, the colours where mechanically pointless. If the paints had different mechanics associated, then sure, three colours. As it is now, it's much better to assign each player a different colour so that the game communicates what's going on better.

The fact that there's no sound for footsteps after a player isn't coloured anymore is weird. Doesn't make sense and takes away from the idea that you're walking.

Too much aimlessness... If both players didn't want to give away their position, you'd end up with... a lot of nothing going on at all.

Overall you need more "tell" as to what's going on. Giving players a goal to shoot at is fundamental to gameplay.

Multiplayer is hard to test anyway! So kudos for giving it a try :)

Colour theory wise... Mixing different colours of paint will never get you to white :) So just no. Make it a muddy brown :P If your "metaphor" is paint then stick to paint :)

Your criticism is very valid and those things were not design choices, but something we plainly didn't have time to do.

We only realised we made it far too difficult to figure out which one are you after we played it in more or less the state it is now, but it was too late by then. Different colours on different buttons were pretty much planned from the get go as a way to provide "charges" for the splat "ability", except they weren't numbers, but different colours.

Also, the decision to take the sound away is based in the fact that audio is not a very reliable indication of things in local multiplayer games. You play with friends and talk over the game so tying an important gameplay moment to it wouldn't be quite right.

We also did plan to add something that would force matches to end, but didnt't have time to implement it because of possibly unnecessary rigidity of our code.

Stay tuned for post-jam developement and we might just change your mind.

This is just great! :D

Creative, fun and simple to play, loved the use of splatting colors as weapon, the graphic style and soundtrack! :3

Had to do some lonely play here because don't have anyone to play with right now, but loved the idea! :)

I can't rate this one because I don't have anyone to play with. :/ I mean, I COULD rate it, but that wouldn't be right. Sorry. Downside of living in middle of nowhere Japan.

Awesome idea. I love couch multiplayer games and I will add it to my top list. Maybe it would be better to give a player only one color. I'm not sure. But anyway, gorgeous game! It's a five for me.

As others stated, it'd be better if each player only had one color. Nonetheless, genius concept! I like this, work on it further!

Didn't seem like much fun, but sure looked good. One of the main frustration is the invisibility of the characters, which influence a lot the gamefeel. It makes the game a lot more confusing, didn't even know who won or lose.
Really nice innovation with the paintings, loungy music and still a solid entry.
