Sage and his Quest to Immortality! by frix360

[raw]
made by frix360 for LD36 (JAM)
First LD ever. Wanted to make a platformer. And it was way harder than I expected... Didn't have full 3 days so most features like sound, better music and good looking animations are missing :(

So here it is: Sage and the Quest to Immortality!

You are sage, who was sent by time-travel magic to the early times to retrieve an item, which contains a knowledge and power of immortality.

Controls A W D or <- ^ -> move
Space - Jump
Z- cast Fire Ball
X - cast Giant boulder at mouse cursor

It looks like my game has way too many bugs... Will fix tomorrow.

Edit1: Fixed most of the bugs. Its still buggy, but playable.

Edit2: Fixed blurry models and going out of the map bug...

Thank you for playing!

Hi, nice game and congratulations ! We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.

Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description.

Gratz on your first game, it was fun but needs work on the controls. It was a weird mix of physics based movement and old school platformer movement and I feel in the future sticking to one or the other would be better.

While waiting for the next Ludum Dare I would recommend trying to make a game like Mario with simple platforming to improve your skills and knowledge of platformers.

Awesome first time entry! You got a lot of cool features in and I like the use of the second spell to help you advance further in the levels. The different art styles clashed a bit but that's completely understandable due to the time constraints. Keep up the good work!

Good first entry much like my game we have a ways to go. The graphics are good but they kinda didn't match. You hade a clean main character and the ground was all pixel art. I love pixel art but the whole game should be pixel art. Unless you were going for some abstract thing. In any case great start.

Not a bad platformer! Where you had to stand and where you had to drop the rock on the catapults were kinda too specific though - I had to find the exact spots to launch myself high enough to reach a platform. Otherwise, for a first game, it's pretty good!

Well done for a first entry :) it has its flaws, the jump physics feel a bit weird, but nothing a bit of tweaking can't fix.

the graphics and music were both good however 2 things with the assets :

- they all look good but, the pixellated ones don't seem to blend that well with the more vector style of the player character

- when you play the game in a windows (1024X768 in my case)the assets seem to not rescale properly and become all blurry, this seem to happen to some games running with unity so it could be because of the way this engine handles resolutions ?

But hey you made your first game and it's a cool one at that, so don't worry these flaws are not much you can't improve over time it's my 6th LD with my team and we still have issues with our games XD

overall congrats ! :)

@thecatspajamas Thank you for response. Yes indeed... Physics with old school controls didn't work too well(and probably need some rebalancing to work correcly). This was my first platformer and I got really important knowledge in my first LD . I will train and make something better next time!

@intXparts Thank you :)

@AWOL Yes indeed. Next time I will try not to mix artstyles like that :D Thank you.

@Ebriosus Thank you ^^. Yes catapults worked really weird for some reason... I was using Unity's physics system so it was difficult to tweak anything. Probably should have used another aprouch :D.

@MrMordem Thank you :D Yea next time I will try use one type of art. I'm not sure about the assets problem. Looks descent on my end. Will look into that ^^

You need to work more on the controls.

Also the art assets you used do not match up with each other. Try to make sure each pixel takes up the same amount of space in the screen.

Good job! Congratulations!

Nice work! Fun game and you've got a lot in there. A bit more fluid movement would make running around more fun I think.

I like the main character! :) Good start. I included it in my compilation video series of Ludum Dare 36, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/QlYKcvCr0YM

Cute art! I'd definitely would like to see how the wolf would look in the same style as the people.

I discovered that the seesaw is super effective if I drop the boulder closer to the center. I almost flew to the moon! :P

I also noticed a faint white splotch above the sage's head. It's very very faint, so I think it might be in there by accident, maaybe. I only really noticed it at the end stage where the background is darker.

Congrats and awesome job on your first LD!

@Jelinib Thank you very much :) Yea the physics worked really weird, next time I will try to make things more predictable :D. The faint... Didn't notice it until now -.- ...
