Philosophers Battle by BubuIIC

[raw]
made by BubuIIC for LD32 (JAM)
This is an epic battle of the minds!
Take the role as one of the most famous philosophers of history and convince your opponents of your worldview.

The game features 9 different philosophers, each with 3 general and 3 personal attacks based on their respective philosophy.
Attacks can deal damage to the conviction of the opponent if they are convincing; or they reduce his sanity if they are confusing.

Sanity is used as a defense and a mean to deal damage, so try to keep sane!

Esc for menu.

-------
As we realized to late, Hobbes is a bit too mighty, so if you want an easy time chose him in the beginning.

-------
The game is playable, but lacks some animation. Also some attacks should still get special effects other than damage and healing. More philosophers are planned, so don't complain, if your favourite philosopher is not in the crowd.

The downloadable version runs in Java, so to play it you need to have the Java virtual machine installed.
Under Windows just double-click the .jar file.
Under Linux run `java -jar philosophers_battle.jar` in a terminal.

-------
Made by Stephan Wäldchen & Marcus Hoffmann
The game is programmed using the libGDX framework (http://libgdx.badlogicgames.com/) and uses some things from their default UI skin.
Graphics made in Gimp.

-------
CHANGELOG:
Edit1: Fixed a few typos and missing line breaks.
Edit2: Web Version now available!
Edit3: Added a post-compo version. A few balancing changes, a few bugs fixed and added character win and lose quotes.

Interesting concept.
Perhaps more quotations would be a good idea.
... And a loosing-sequence.

As a philosophy graduate, I really enjoyed this game! I think that it would certainly benefit from some sounds, but having said that what you've got here is great! :D

I have master degree in history of science and I really loved your idea. I was able to defeat all philosophers! The pixelart of them is very good, I loved too. Needs sound/music, one background image (in pixelart) for each one of philosophers should be great! Keep the project on!!!! Congrats!

Just to add: as a friend of mine pointed out, it would be nice to see some female philosophers featured. ;)

Good take on the theme, needed a little more direction on what my moves could do. Hobbes destroyed by Ubermensch.

@JoshyOshKenoshi: Definitely. We were just using the philosphers we were most familiar with. We plan to add more in a newer version.

@Jungle: Coll, thansk very much!

@Chesyr: Start with Kant or Hobbes if it is to difficult. We are still working on the balancing.

Funny idea and great sprites. ++for playing Schopenhauer even if I would have chosen different quotes ;)
I can't believe Nietzsche has as much sanity as me. This is not what I read about him ! He was the toughest but I defeated them all !

I like the concept, but for me it was very hard to understand what my attacks/abilites could/will do to the opponent. Also the fact that philosophers reuse each other's utterances breaks the fun a little. Nevertheless this is definitely an unconventional weapon!

Very original use of the theme, and a very entertaining and interesting concept! :-) Some of the philosophers need a bit of balancing.

Very amusing scenario.
I wish the minor arguments were more appropriate; it's a little bit immersion-breaking to see Kierkegaard saying "That's what she said!"

At first I thought that I would really have to select the best answers, but then i realized it is final fantasy-like epic battle game!
The characters could have logs describing them, their strengths, weaknesses and attacks, but it is also fun to discover them on your own.
I found very funny in a battle that ended in a tie! Haha!
Good job! :)
